After our building phase in late June & early July we from the FuturamaLab are on our way back to Chemnitz to ride around town with our CAR(s) WE LIKE as part of the 3000 Garagen Project of the European Cultural Capital Initiative. We are very much looking forwad to this collaboration with the ConstuctLab! 

 

THE CARS WE LIKE

A humorous exploration of the future of the car

THE CARS WE LIKE is an art project that re-uses and re-purposes materials to construct vehicles through a variety of building techniques. Situated at the crossroads of art, technology, and urbanism, these mobile objects playfully undermine prevailing conventional concepts of urban mobility. Appearing in traffic as absurd and dadaistic vehicles, they humorously question the ways we move through our cities.

During a live building performance from June 28 to July 5, 2025, a human-powered truck was created with the collaboration of Michelle Grünberg, Carlos Kämpfe, and Tim Ellinger (trainees from the VW plant Chemnitz).

As part of THE SCHOOL OF GARAGE* (August 24–31, 2025), this truck will be technically refined together with workshop participants to take on diverse logistical tasks. In a series of street interventions, goods, metaphors, people, and ideas will be transported between the nine garages, creating a functional connection between these temporary studios and their artists.

The workshop will be accompanied by the collective -h- of the Cellule d'Action Rituelle (Cell for Ritual Action) of the ZAD NDDL - the biggest occupied zone in Europe. They will help us reflect on the relation of territoriality, capitalism and mobility and devise queer-ritualistic approaches with us that we will present on the 30th of August.

Our vehicle will be on display again in the Garagen Campus of the European Cultural Capital Chemnitz 2025 from September until end of November.

I feel very honored to have been invited to the ESRI 2025 of the Mind&Life Europe Network as a speaker and faculty member. It's buddhist and contemplative nature is new to me and I am very excited - the very thoughtful programming looks extremely promising and this will surely not be just another conference with smoking heads and aching bodies - but a full spiritual, body&mind experience. I am very happy and privileged to take part in it and contribute with some socio-political contributions from my work both as an artist as well as theorist. Enabling rituals for the social production of feelings in times of ecological demise

Input for ESRI 2025 “Down to Earth: Exploring Meaningful Ways of Being Together” by Kilian Jörg

The ecological crisis has made it into the popular conscience of mainstream discourses over that last decade, but it is today mostly associated with negative feelings such as despair, panic, grief or anxiety. In this input, I want to argue (with Shotwell 2026) that these feelings are not the “natural” result of living in times of planetary catastrophe, but are a cultural product of our hegemonial societal order.

Whereas other catastrophic events, such as natural disasters, black-outs or terrorist attacks often elicit feelings of strengthened solidarity and purpose (compare for example Solnit 2004), it is interesting to investigate why the planetary catastrophe has so far mostly individuated feelings that are of a despairing and atomizing nature: people who suffer from climate-anxiety mostly retreat into depressive inaction and the affective climate of panic leads to activist burn-out that is a real issue in movements.

Discussing examples of my own artistic practice of creating ritualistic spaces, I want to argue for the necessity of creating social and cultural institutions that promote the mutual production of enabling feelings. Ecology is not just a problem of the “natural” world, but equally one of our cultural values and infrastructures that need to be radically revised. The capitalist order based on private property, atomistic individuality, neo-colonial extractivism and heteronormative family constructions has to be de-naturalized in order to reveal it as the main reason for the production of negative feelings in the catastrophe that we need to overcome in order to become able to act. Examples from radical land reclamations and autonomous zones have in most recent times been the most fertile sites for this civilizatory task (compare Jordan & Fremeaux 2024, Gelderloos 2022).

I will talk through my experiences of the speculative-religion-turned-artistic-project Toxic Temple I have invented with Anna Lerchbaumer and will narrate about my most recent artistic project: the creation of the first national holiday devoted to an ecological topic. The Zwentendorf-Holiday will introduce you to a local specificity of Austrian ecological struggles and how they can be institutionalized to create new identities of being part of a community that refrains from the most ecocidal modern infrastructures as a virtue needed to survive and thrive on this planet.

Das Rein-Menschliche ist im Anthropozän schlicht nicht mehr genug. Während sich große Teile des Posthumanismus mit Quallen, Oktopussen und Flechten auseinandersetzen, wollen wir in dieser Ausgabe des Posthuman Social Club dem im Mainstream sicherlich größten Begehren nach dem Nicht-Menschlichen widmen: dem Begehren, einen fetten Schlitten sein Eigen zu nennen, dem Begehren, mit 200 Sachen über eine leergefegte Autobahn zu brausen, dem Begehren, sich in einer spektakulären Karambolage in einem hitzigen Feuerball den heißeren Materien anzugleichen, kurz: dem Begehren, eine Maschine zu werden. 

Am 9.7 um 19h laden wir zur fünften Ausgabe des Posthuman Social Club ins Super Autodrom am Wiener Prater. Sind die ewigen Stöße der Bumper Cars eine hilflose sexuelle Annäherung, ein kompulsiver Zerstörungszwang oder beides? Unter dem Titel "Autodestruct me, baby" werden wir transdisziplinär dieser Vereinigung von Tanatos und Eros im bewegten Selbst (=alt. gr. für "Automobil") nachgehen und den Umstand zelebrieren, dass man mit einem einfachen Menschenkörper in den meisten Bereichen den Menschenwelt ziemlich nackt und alt aussieht. Vielleicht ist das Anthropozän viel treffender ein "Automobilozän"? Die Rhythmen der fordistischen Produktion und Bewegung diktieren unsere Alltäglichkeit, unsere Musik, unsere Wirtschaft, unser Sexualleben, unser Imaginär und unsere Raumplanung. Musikalisch, performativ und theoretisch werden wir in "Autodestruct me, baby!" den unausweichlichen Rhythmen der Automobilgesellschaft nachgehen. Das Autodrom ist hierbei vielleicht ein zentraler Ort, an dem die ihr inhärente Zerstörungskraft rituell durch den ständig wiederholten Unfall erfahrbar gemacht wird. Durch die zwanghafte Wiederholen des ewigen Auf- und Abflauen des nicht weg zu denkenden Verkehrs werden wir dem Geruch unserer Endzeit spürbar machen und seine kraftstoffgetränkte Euphorie ungefiltert feiern. Macht Euch auf ein Schleudertrauma gefasst und nehmt Kopfhörer mit - bei dieser Ausgabe des Posthuman Social Clubs werdet ihr alle Bruchpiloten unserer planetaren Autodestruktion!

"My conversation with Kilian was one of the most enjoyable interviews I’ve ever done on writing and thinking. There’s something very refreshing about the way that Kilian thinks about the act of writing in the university. I’m not sure where it came from, but the more tactile and situated sort of theorizing he is able to do makes me want to spend more time with the texts that he looks at and really engage with the threads there.

Because he’s using them to weave together different concepts of liberation, with the ultimate goal, I think, of showing how to fight the imposition of one worldview on the planet. Kilian is fighting to defend other possible methods of reasoning. It might not be a magical solution for our ecological crisis, but I found that talking to Kilian about the ideas in Ecological Reasonings opened up approaches to problems like what to do about Donald Trump or artificial intelligence or our attachment to the car as a convenience we can’t live without, regardless of what it does to us.

One of the wonderful things about his book is that it is using this idea of the “resilience of Reason” to deconstruct and decompose the current technocratic world order — he’s saying that there is a continuum between Trump, the narrowing of political possibilities, and Monorationalism.

What he wants is a world where we are actively “nourishing ground for many other voices to be heard.” Where we are consciously worrying about and destabilizing the relationship between the things we consider active, aggressive and ambitious, and the things we consider passive, wasteful and directionless."

Von verstrahlten Katzen bis zum Zwentendorf-Feiertag

One of the reoccuring topics I keep coming back to in both my artistic as well as theoretical work is that of nuclear power, radiation and the unfathomable long-durationality of radioactive toxicity. I am very happy to bring the different threads and approaches I have developed over the years together in one Workshop at Kunstuni Linz next Tuesday.

Lorsque tu étais devenu-e un exemple de comportement écologique ou que tu faisais une grimace d'irritation face à un commentaire raciste ou sexiste ? La morale et la moralisation ont longtemps été perçues comme l'apanage des conservateurs et des prudes privilégiés aux lèvres pincées. Elle a été utilisée contre nous, les queers et les progressistes. Mais ces derniers temps, la situation semble avoir changé. Les conservateurs paniquent de plus en plus face à ce qu'ils perçoivent comme des moralisateurs et des grondeurs "woke". En outre, les mouvements fascistes tels que le trumpisme peuvent être compris - en partie - comme étant motivés par une rébellion contre cette moralisation perçue. Comment en sommes-nous arrivés là ? Et...

Comment pouvons-nous comprendre une moralité queer ? En pensant à des films comme "Pride", dans lesquels la construction d'une morale est un élément essentiel de la construction de coalitions queer entre les mineurs de charbon à la campagne et les queers en ville, nous voulons réfléchir au rôle de la moralisation dans notre société. Nous essayons de comprendre la moralisation comme un processus de construction de communautés dans les temps catastrophiques à venir, communautés qui ont plus de pouvoir que les conservateurs qui s'accrochent à leur ancienne moralité. Dans cet atelier, Alexis Shotwell et Kilian Jörg souhaitent discuter avec vous de leurs expériences personnelles en matière de moralisation dans et autour des espaces militantes et queers - qu'elles soient bonnes ou mauvaises.

Alexis Shotwell enseigne et écrit à Ottawa, sur des terres algonquines non cédées, où elle fait partie du collectif anarchiste Punch Up (www.punchupcollective.org). Ses recherches portent sur la complexité, la complicité et la transformation collective. Elle est co-chercheuse pour le AIDS Activist History Project (www.aidsactivisthistory.ca) et auteure de Knowing Otherwise : Race, Gender, and Implicit Understanding and Against Purity : Living Ethically in Compromised Times.

Kilian Jörg travaille à la fois sur le plan artistique et philosophique sur le thème de la catastrophe écologique et sur la manière dont ses forces transformatrices peuvent être imaginées et déployées au mieux. Ses publications précédentes portaient sur la culture des clubs, le contrecoup politique d'un point de vue écologique, la culture de la distance en période de catastrophe et une religion spéculative des déchets. Ses recherches actuelles portent sur la voiture en tant que métaphore de nos liens toxiques avec les modes de vie modernes (Autodestruction, à paraître en septembre 2025 chez Wildproject), sur les effets socio-psychologiques de la vie avec l'écocide et sur les stratégies activistes radicales de récupération des terres comme la ZAD de NDDL en France (Durchlöchert den Status Quo !, 2025). Kilian travaille à la fois en théorie et en pratique artistique et militante sur la façon de créer des rituels qui nous permettent de cultiver des sentiments plus complexes en temps d'effondrement. Kilian est affilié à plusieurs collectifs, dont le Futurama.Lab, Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration et le SFB Affective Societies à la FU Berlin.

An Ecology of Moralizing - Leg 3 of Europe-Tour: Munich

As the third leg of our "Moralizing"-Tour in Europe, Alexis Shotwell and me will give a workshop at the HFPH in Munich next Monday. Find all infos here.

“Moralizing” is now mostly regarded as a pejorative. How did this start? The term is often – especially from the left – seen as the purview of the pursed-lips privileged prude who disregards the material grounds and social complexities of capitalist life. To be moralizing is to be naive, preposterous and even apolitical. Thus, while many want to be ethical humans, few want to appear to be moralizing under any circumstances. In this presentation, we examine how we have gotten to this point and ask if this prevalent dualism between ethics (as good) and morals (as bad) is not itself an oversimplification neoliberal theory thrives on. We reformulate moralizing as a situated, concrete form of custom- and community-building in a shared planetary situation of ongoing catastrophe. We argue that this kind of moralizing might be essential for the long breath that transformative politics require in today’s dire situation.

This workshop is organized by Prof. Dr. Barbara Schellhammer and Lena Schützle (Intercultural Social Transformation).

"In dieser Gesellschaft sind wir gezwungen, das Auto zu begehren" - Gespräch im Dissens-Podcast

Ich durfte mit Lukas Ondreka vom Dissens-Podcast ein langes und sehr gelungenes Gespräch über das Auto, politische Herausforderungen und die ökologische Katastrophe führen. Unten findet ihr alle weiteren Infos und einen Link.

Darauf hinzuweisen, wie schädlich das Auto für Mensch und Umwelt ist, damit werden werden wir nicht zu einer autofreien Welt kommen, ist Kilian Jörg überzeugt. In seinem Buch "Das Auto und die ökologische Katastrophe" zeigt der Philosoph und Aktivist, wie tief die Automobilität in uns alle eingeschrieben ist - das Auto ist etwas, das wir im Kapitalismus begehren müssen. Öko-Linke müssen die Abhängigkeit vom und auch die Lust am Auto ernst nehmen, das Begehren umleiten auf eine Gesellschaft, die nicht so toxisch ist, dass wir uns ins Auto flüchten wollen. Ein Gespräch über das SUV als Schutzraum in der Ellenbogengesellschaft, Auto-Entzug durch Stadtplanung und Verkehrswende-Aktivismus mit Humor.

In this presentation, we examine how we have gotten to this point and if moralizing is happening whether we want it or not. We ask if a rejection of moralizing as judgemental condemnation is perhaps in itself an oversimplification neoliberal philosophy thrives on. By reviewing radical sources of anarchist moralizing, we want to reformulate it as a situated, concrete form of custom- and community-building in a shared planetary situation of ongoing catastrophe. We argue that this kind of moralizing might be essential for the long breath that transformative politics require in today’s dire situation.

 

"Durchlöchert den Status Quo!" & "A100 Wegbassen" in Berlin

Nächste Woche habe ich mal wieder ein paar Veranstaltungen in Berlin:

 1) Zuallererst ist am 17.5 A100 Wegbassen, wohin ich alle ganz eindringlich einlade, die für eine lebenswerte Stadt in Berlin sind. Von 14-17h ist Demo beim S Bahnhof Treptower Park, und ab 17h RAVE! Ich - und einige ganz tolle Genoss*innen - werden auch bei der Demo sprechen und euch einen tollen Überblick über die sehr diverse Anti-Auto-Protestbewegung in Europa geben können. Außerdem werde ich aus dem Kapitel zur "Utopie der autofreien Welten" aus meinem Buch "Das Auto und die ökologische Katastrophe" lesen. Lasst Euch das ganze Spektakel nicht entgehen!

An Ecology of Moralizing @ OFF Brussels, 14.5.2025

After our North-American tour last fall, Alexis Shotwell and me will be touring Central Europe for the next months - again giving a few lectures and workshops on our current book project An Ecology of Moralizing. Our first leg will be in the nice queer space One Field Fallow in Brussels on the 14th of May, Wednesday from 19:30 onwards.

Have you ever felt you are moralizing whether you wanted it or not? When you stood out as an example in ecological behavior or just made an irritated face at a racist or sexist comment? Morality and moralizing have for the longest time been perceived as the purview of the conservatives and the pursed-lips privileged prude. It was used against us queer and progressives. But in recent times this seems to have changed. Conservatives are more and more panicking about what they perceive as "woke" moralizing and scolding. Furthermore, fascist movements such as Trumpism can be understood - in part - as motivated by a rebellion against this perceived moralizing. How did we get there? Is it actually bad to talk about what would be a good way to live together?  

We propose a queer project of building morale through better understanding and practicing moralizing. Thinking with histories of AIDS activism and movies like "Pride" (in which building morale is an essential part of coalitions between coal miners in the countryside and queers in the city), we want to think about the role of moralizing in our society. Moralizing as a process of building communities in the catastrophic times to come which have more agency than conservatives, who cling to their old morality. In this workshop Alexis Shotwell and Kilian Jörg want to discuss with you personal experiences with moralizing - whether good or bad.

"Durchlöchert des Status Quo!" - Gespräch im Radio FSK

 

Bei unserem Besuch in Hamburg haben wir im Hotelzimmer ein tolles Gespräch über die utopische Politik des "Durchlöchert des Status Quo!" mit Nora Sdun geführt, welches jetzt online ist. Ich bin sehr glücklich über die vielen Details und Präzisierungen, die wir in diesem langen Gespräch ansprechen können.

Zu hören ist ein langes Interview mit den Autoren Michael Hirsch und Kilian Jörg. Das Buch heißt »Durchlöchert den Status Quo« und ist im März 2025 im hamburger Verlag Edition Nautilus erschienen, in der Reihe der Nautilus Flugschriften.

Eine kurze Einführung zum Buch: Die politische Gegenwart ist paradox: Während den meisten Akteur*innen in Politik, Gesellschaft und Bewegungen klar ist, dass angesichts der Klimakatastrophe ein Weitermachen wie gehabt unmöglich ist, ist eine Alternative zum Status quo so unvorstellbar wie noch nie. Die politische Fantasie scheint verödet, das Vakuum der Demokratieverdrossenheit wird von rechts besetzt.
Michael Hirsch und Kilian Jörg starten den Versuch, die linke Vorstellungskraft wieder aufzuforsten – inspiriert von dem in Frankreich berüchtigten Konzept der »zu verteidigenden Zone« (Zone à défendre – ZAD). Die berühmte ZAD in Notre-Dame-des-Landes besteht seit über fünfzehn Jahren als ein aus Verwertungszusammenhängen herausgelöstes Gebiet, in dem mit neuen sozialen Beziehungen, mit neuen Verhältnissen zu Arbeit und Ökologie experimentiert wird. 


Gerahmt wird das Interview von zwei weiteren Elementen:
1) Das Soundstück von Nina Kuttler und Louis d’Heudieres, mit dem Titel »that metal voice quavers«. Ihr Hörstück handelt vom Abbau eines fiktiven Minerals unter fragwürdigen Bedingungen, um in den kapitalistischen Kreislauf eingespeist zu werden.

2) Eine kurze Passage aus dem Roman »Die Flüchtigen« von Alain Damasio, 838 Seiten,
Übersetzung von Milena Adam, erschienen bei Matthes & Seitz Berlin 2021 

"Die Freiheit, die wer meint?" Panel with Jens Balzer und Angela Richter @donaufestival 2025

"Die großen Systeme krachen. Das Misstrauen gegen den „Deep State“ und seine Institutionen wird algorithmisch befeuert, die Demokratien erscheinen durch einen neuen Autoritarismus bedroht. Im Kern vieler Debatten steht der Streit um die Freiheit. Wer ist wovon frei und wozu könnte sie dienen? Dazu diskutieren Jens Balzer, der ein Buch über den Postliberalismus vorbereitet, Kilian Jörg, der für radikale Demokratie und eine ökologische Wende plädiert und Angela Richter, die für Individualismus und einen antiautoritären Liberalismus eintritt."

Übermorgen darf ich am Donaufestival 2025 in Krems mit Jens Balzer und Angela Richter über kein geringeres Thema als die Freiheit diskutieren. Mal sehen was dabei rumkommt - für mich ist Isabelle Stenger's Satz "Liberté est si un peuple peut créer ses propres problèmes" hier immer noch leitgebend und ich bin gespannt, ob wir in der Stunde zu dritt so tief gehen können, dass man diesen Satz auseinandersetzen kann.

Interview zu Auto und ZAD im Kleberx-Podcast

Ich durfte im Kleberx-Podcast über das Auto, die ZAD, den Frust bei Tempo 150 und die Notwendigkeit des radikalen Umbaus unserer Umwelten als zukunftsgewandte "Umweltpolitik" sprechen. Ihr könnt ihr unten nachhören und hier noch mehr Infos finden.

"Der quälende Stau, Lärm und Abgase durch Autos erscheinen uns normal. Sind wir noch bei Verstand? Der Philosoph Kilian Jörg schlägt Alternativen vor, wie wir Verkehr und unser Zusammenlaben umgestalten können. Städte wie Paris machen das schon vor. Das Automobil hat sich in den Alltag eingebrannt, doch das ist weder sinnvoll noch umweltschonend. Offenbar gehen wir kapitalstarken Unternehmern und egoistischen Politikern auf den Leim, wenn wir unseren Umgang mit dem Objekt Auto nicht hinterfragen."

"Durchlöchert den Status Quo!" im Schauspielhaus Hamburg, 17.4

 

Am Donnerstag, 17.4, 19:30, stelle ich mit Michael Hirsch "Durchlöchert den Status Quo!" im Schauspielhaus Hamburg vor. Tickets und mehr Info hier.

Die politische Gegenwart ist paradox: Während den meisten klar ist, dass angesichts der Klimakatastrophe ein Weitermachen wie gehabt unmöglich ist, ist eine Alternative zum Status quo so unvorstellbar wie noch nie. Die politische Fantasie scheint verödet, das Vakuum der Demokratieverdrossenheit wird von rechts besetzt. In ihrer Flugschrift »Durchlöchert den Status quo!« starten Michael Hirsch und Kilian Jörg den Versuch, die linke Vorstellungskraft wieder aufzuforsten. Die »REALNISCHE 0« wird an diesem Abend zum Ort einer radikalen
Spekulation: Was wäre, wenn der Staat das Potenzial autonomer Zonen erkennen und fördern würde – statt es zu bekämpfen? Den Status quo zu durchlöchern, das bedeutet auch, beharrlich zu betonen, dass hinter der trüben Lethargie des kapitalistischen Realismus noch immer die Möglichkeit einer Vielfalt anderer Welten liegt – die Zukunft ist eine zu verteidigende Zone.

Buchvorstellungen im April in Berlin: Das Auto und die ökologische Katastrophe & Durchlöchert den Status Quo!

Auf meiner Buchtour werde ich 4 Präsentationen in Berlin machen in diversen Settings. Mein Buch "Das Auto und die ökologische Katastrophe" werde ich drei mal in unterschiedlichen Kontellationen zur Diskussion stellen, am 11.4 mit Tatjana Söding an der FU Berlin, am 14.4 diskutiere ich über den neuen Techno-Faschismus mit Conrad Kunze im Museum des Kapitalismus (siehe wunderschönes Poster unten) und am 15.4 mit Anna Baaz vom Volksentscheid Berlin autofrei im Lettretage und .

Weiters werde ich am 16.4 mein neuestes Buch "Durchlöchert den Status Quo!" im Buchladen Zabriskie vorstellen - siehe wunderschönes Poster unten.
