"Durchlöchert den Status Quo!" & "A100 Wegbassen" in Berlin

Nächste Woche habe ich mal wieder ein paar Veranstaltungen in Berlin:

 1) Zuallererst ist am 17.5 A100 Wegbassen, wohin ich alle ganz eindringlich einlade, die für eine lebenswerte Stadt in Berlin sind. Von 14-17h ist Demo beim S Bahnhof Treptower Park, und ab 17h RAVE! Ich - und einige ganz tolle Genoss*innen - werden auch bei der Demo sprechen und euch einen tollen Überblick über die sehr diverse Anti-Auto-Protestbewegung in Europa geben können. Außerdem werde ich aus dem Kapitel zur "Utopie der autofreien Welten" aus meinem Buch "Das Auto und die ökologische Katastrophe" lesen. Lasst Euch das ganze Spektakel nicht entgehen!

"Durchlöchert des Status Quo!" - Gespräch im Radio FSK

 

Bei unserem Besuch in Hamburg haben wir im Hotelzimmer ein tolles Gespräch über die utopische Politik des "Durchlöchert des Status Quo!" mit Nora Sdun geführt, welches jetzt online ist. Ich bin sehr glücklich über die vielen Details und Präzisierungen, die wir in diesem langen Gespräch ansprechen können.

Zu hören ist ein langes Interview mit den Autoren Michael Hirsch und Kilian Jörg. Das Buch heißt »Durchlöchert den Status Quo« und ist im März 2025 im hamburger Verlag Edition Nautilus erschienen, in der Reihe der Nautilus Flugschriften.

Eine kurze Einführung zum Buch: Die politische Gegenwart ist paradox: Während den meisten Akteur*innen in Politik, Gesellschaft und Bewegungen klar ist, dass angesichts der Klimakatastrophe ein Weitermachen wie gehabt unmöglich ist, ist eine Alternative zum Status quo so unvorstellbar wie noch nie. Die politische Fantasie scheint verödet, das Vakuum der Demokratieverdrossenheit wird von rechts besetzt.
Michael Hirsch und Kilian Jörg starten den Versuch, die linke Vorstellungskraft wieder aufzuforsten – inspiriert von dem in Frankreich berüchtigten Konzept der »zu verteidigenden Zone« (Zone à défendre – ZAD). Die berühmte ZAD in Notre-Dame-des-Landes besteht seit über fünfzehn Jahren als ein aus Verwertungszusammenhängen herausgelöstes Gebiet, in dem mit neuen sozialen Beziehungen, mit neuen Verhältnissen zu Arbeit und Ökologie experimentiert wird. 


Gerahmt wird das Interview von zwei weiteren Elementen:
1) Das Soundstück von Nina Kuttler und Louis d’Heudieres, mit dem Titel »that metal voice quavers«. Ihr Hörstück handelt vom Abbau eines fiktiven Minerals unter fragwürdigen Bedingungen, um in den kapitalistischen Kreislauf eingespeist zu werden.

2) Eine kurze Passage aus dem Roman »Die Flüchtigen« von Alain Damasio, 838 Seiten,
Übersetzung von Milena Adam, erschienen bei Matthes & Seitz Berlin 2021 

Interview zu Auto und ZAD im Kleberx-Podcast

Ich durfte im Kleberx-Podcast über das Auto, die ZAD, den Frust bei Tempo 150 und die Notwendigkeit des radikalen Umbaus unserer Umwelten als zukunftsgewandte "Umweltpolitik" sprechen. Ihr könnt ihr unten nachhören und hier noch mehr Infos finden.

"Der quälende Stau, Lärm und Abgase durch Autos erscheinen uns normal. Sind wir noch bei Verstand? Der Philosoph Kilian Jörg schlägt Alternativen vor, wie wir Verkehr und unser Zusammenlaben umgestalten können. Städte wie Paris machen das schon vor. Das Automobil hat sich in den Alltag eingebrannt, doch das ist weder sinnvoll noch umweltschonend. Offenbar gehen wir kapitalstarken Unternehmern und egoistischen Politikern auf den Leim, wenn wir unseren Umgang mit dem Objekt Auto nicht hinterfragen."

"Durchlöchert den Status Quo!" im Schauspielhaus Hamburg, 17.4

 

Am Donnerstag, 17.4, 19:30, stelle ich mit Michael Hirsch "Durchlöchert den Status Quo!" im Schauspielhaus Hamburg vor. Tickets und mehr Info hier.

Spekulation: Was wäre, wenn der Staat das Potenzial autonomer Zonen erkennen und fördern würde – statt es zu bekämpfen? Den Status quo zu durchlöchern, das bedeutet auch, beharrlich zu betonen, dass hinter der trüben Lethargie des kapitalistischen Realismus noch immer die Möglichkeit einer Vielfalt anderer Welten liegt – die Zukunft ist eine zu verteidigende Zone.

Buchvorstellungen im April in Berlin: Das Auto und die ökologische Katastrophe & Durchlöchert den Status Quo!

Auf meiner Buchtour werde ich 4 Präsentationen in Berlin machen in diversen Settings. Mein Buch "Das Auto und die ökologische Katastrophe" werde ich drei mal in unterschiedlichen Kontellationen zur Diskussion stellen, am 11.4 mit Tatjana Söding an der FU Berlin, am 14.4 diskutiere ich über den neuen Techno-Faschismus mit Conrad Kunze im Museum des Kapitalismus (siehe wunderschönes Poster unten) und am 15.4 mit Anna Baaz vom Volksentscheid Berlin autofrei im Lettretage und .

"Durchlöchert den Status Quo" - JETZT IM BUCHHANDEL ERHÄLTLICH !!

Vorgestern hat mich unser neues Buch "Durchlöchert den Status Quo" postalisch und frisch aus der Druckerei erreicht. Ich bin sehr froh, dass dieses politisch neue Wege gehende Buch mit Michael Hirsch nun das Licht der Welt erblickt hat und bin schon sehr gespannt auf die Rezeption! STOFFWECHSEL Labor 2024 (part 2) – SOILED LOVE: ties that liberate, 15.11 17h

Over the past years, Stoffwechsel – Ecologies of Collaboration has explored autonomous zones and spaces of resistance, such as the anticapitalist agricultural cooperative Longo Maï and the Zone à Défendre (ZAD) at Notre-Dame-des-Landes, where activists fought against the construction of a new airport. This year, we expand our lens further and also include Indigenous protest camps in Canada, where new forms of autonomy, liberation, and environmental defense are being forged. These protest camps do more than block harmful infrastructures – they liberate our minds, opening up new ways of thinking and being in the world. 

Our guest Anton Vandevoorde, whom we met this spring at the ZAD in France, explores with us how knowledge is produced in these autonomous zones and what happens when different worldviews and understandings of nature intersect or come into conflict.

We think not only about the ties between movements, but also about the bonds woven between movements, people, and the land itself. They are living networks that create new cultural expressions and experiment with alternative forms of social organization.

And what better place to celebrate these ties than at Lobau, where activists occupied construction sites in 2021/22 to resist a new highway. As we walk together through Lobau, we will honor the enduring legacy of these occupations, reflecting on how they continue to inspire and inform future movements.

"Liberating Land from Ecocide / Une Ile et une nuit - Screening" - Toronto (9.10) and Chicago (13.10) legs

As the last two legs of the little North-American tour with the film "Une ile et une nuit" and my introductory talks about ZADism we will visit Toronto (9th Oct) and Chicago (13th Oct). In Chicago we will be joined by Eman Abdelhadi , co-author of the great book Everything for Everyone: An Oral History of the New York Commune 2052-2072. Together we will discuss the the differences and possible alliances between revolutionary projects of reclaiming land, commons and territories for radical ecological and anti-capitalist transformation in North-America and Europe.

“ZAD,” or “zone à defender,” has entered the European lexicon as a general term for direct collective action against large-scale development projects that would damage the environment. First coming into prominence in the collective opposition to airport construction in Notre-Dame-des-Landes, France, the approach and tactic has spread widely.

In this conversation, visiting Austrian activist and writer Kilian Jörg will discuss the practice and theory of the ZAD. Then they’ll be joined by Alexis Shotwell for a conversation about how zadiste praxis offers some interesting provocations for those of us interested in direct action for the environment in Canadian contexts.

In their shared writing, Kilian and Alexis are considering the concrete world-building exemplified in the ZAD as a model for how to be with land differently.  If we think of our values as situated, place-based, as growing out of the earth and the places we live, what forms of collective care and practice would we need to create? We are interested in how zadism practices allow us to become differentiated, non-universal, specific, particular, while at the same time collective and inherently political. Can proliferating autonomous relations to territory, in turn, contribute to pluralizing and proliferating multiple ways to be alive together?

Liberating land from ecocide: “An Island and One Night” - Talk & Screening @ Social Innovation Center, Ottawa, 1st of Oct 24

 “ZAD,” or “zone à defender,” has entered the European lexicon as a general term for militant direct collective action against large-scale development projects. First coming into prominence in the collective opposition airport construction in Notre-Dame-des-Landes, France, (still the largest self-organized autonomous zone in Europe) the approach and tactic has spread widely. To be a “zadiste” is defined in the Le Petit Robert dictionary as “a militant occupying a ZAD to oppose a proposed development that would damage the environment.” In the Canadian context, we know relatively little about these concrete fights or the conceptual formation of this idea. Come hear from a visiting European radical who has spent time on many ZADs over the last years and will share insights and an autonomously created film illuminating this tendency.

What does life feel like in zones liberated from ecocidal capitalism? Will its residents – moved together by war and climate change – develop a kind of relation with the land they live on that simply abandons the bureaucratic methods of the last “green capitalists”? Residents of the Quartier Libre des Lentillières in Dijon, one of the most famous occupied zones in France, have produced an auto-fictional cinematic firework in a self-managed and collective manner, which makes the desire for radical-ecological change sensually comprehensible. It gives a magnificent insight into current radical French activist scenes around the strategy of the ZAD and can serve as a generous starting point for a trans-Atlantic discussion on how liberatory strategies of reclaiming territory can look and feel like in a world tainted by settler-colonialism, fascism and other toxic forms of exclusion.

The film An Island and One Night (“Une Ile et une nuit”) has screened widely in the European context, but is normally only shown when one of the activists from Lentillieres is with it. Activist/artist Kilian Jörg will be visiting North America for two months in the Fall of 2024, and was invited by the group who made the film to share it with us. Ottawa is one of the very few screening sites in North America!

I am very honored that the collective of the Pirates de Lentillières has entrusted me with becoming some kind of ambassador of their unique film "Une Ile et une nuit" in North-America (usually they only show it with their personal presence). I will be showing the film - accompanied by a little input on the political pholosophy of "ZAD Partout" and it's political background in France - in Montreal, Ottawa and Kingston (and perhaps Chicago - tbc). I have written before how incredibly important I find this film. For me it is the best document I know that can transpose the somatic joy of rebellion and reclaiming territory behind ZADism that gives me so much political hope and horizon in these otherwise dark times.

About the film: An Island and One Night (“Une Ile et une nuit”) is a fictional film made collectively over the past two years by the residents and users of the Quartier Libre des Lentillères, a self-organized area on the last remaining market garden land in the city of Dijon. These 8 hectares have been occupied and recultivated since 2010, in resistance to a concrete "ecocity" project that still threatens them today. In the middle of the city, these fallow spaces and abandoned houses have been transformed into a self-managed, multi-purpose district, where collective housing, market gardening, self-construction, festive and cultural events, etc. intermingle. It's a place of struggle and solidarity of all kinds, as well as a veritable reserve of biodiversity.

Learning from the ZAD - Theory Program at Klima Biennale Wien

This June I will curate a little theory and discourse program with the Futurama.Lab at the Klima Biennale Vienna. The program will be focused on the ZAD - the largest occupied zone in Europe, situated in North-Western France - and its potential for radical & much needed cultural, social and ecological transformation. We will host the premiere in the German speaking area of one of the most beautiful and poetic films I know about the matter and Michael Hirsch and me will present our upcoming book about the ZAD.

There will be two events, both taking place in the main hall at the Nord-Westbahn-Gelände of the Klima Biennale (map):

Wie fühlt sich das Leben in vom ökozidalen Kapitalismus befreiten Zonen an? Werden die Bewohner*innen, die – von Krieg und Klimawandel bewegt – hier zusammengekommen sind, eine Art „neo-indigenes“ Selbstverständnis entwickeln, welches die bürokratischen Methoden der letzten „grünen Kapitalisten“ einfach nicht mehr verstehen kann? Bewohner*innen des Quartier Libre des Lentillières in Dijon, eine der bekanntesten besetzten Zonen Frankreichs, haben in selbstverwalteter und kollektiver Weise ein auto-fiktionales filmisches Feuerwerk produziert, welches die Lust am radikal-ökologischen Wandel sinnlich nachvollziehbar macht. Premiere im deutschsprachigen Raum!

Was wäre, wenn radikal-ökologische Besetzungen wie die ZAD nicht staatlich bekämpft, sondern gefördert werden? Es wäre ja im Eigeninteresse ihres Überlebens – denn wenn sich unsere hochkomplexe Gesellschaft nicht als Ganzes genügend schnell ändern lässt, muss die bitter notwendige Transformation von solch kleinen Mikro-Utopien ausgehen. Michael Hirsch und Kilian Jörg stellen ein gemeinsames Buchprojekt vor, welches jenseits der herrschenden bipolaren Neigung zwischen Techno-Optimismus und Katastrophismus eine neue utopische Strahlkraft aus der ZAD zu entwickeln versucht.

Soiled Love: Eindrücke aus der ZAD

I've just spent two weeks in the ZAD Notre-Dame-de-Landes with my research cluster Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration. It was an amazing research experience and first impressions can be heard as a sound installation at our Futurama.Lab's Temporary Autonomous Region (TAR) at the Klima Biennale Wien, Nord-West-Bahnhof-Gelände, on the 25th and 26th of May from 17-22h.

Der Forschungscluster Stoffwechsel – Ökologien der Zusammenarbeit besuchte im Mai diesen Jahres die ZAD Notre-Dame-des-Landes. Dieser Ort ist ein zum Symbol gewordener Ort des Kampfes um neue Verhältnisse zum Land, der aus dem Widerstand gegen einen geplanten Großflughafen im Nord-Westen von Nantes entstanden ist. Wir besuchten dieses in Frankreich legendäre Labor für alternative und autonome Lebensformen, die in queerer Pluralität eine Art neues Common entwickeln. Aus unseren Begegnungen, Diskussionen, Wanderungen und unserer Mitarbeit auf diesem fast 15km langen Territorium haben wir Klang- und Spracheindrücke gesammelt, die unser Verdauen, Lernen und Reflektieren wiedergeben. In der TAR auf dem Nordwestbahnhof-Gelände der Klima Biennale Wien 2024 werden diese Klangschnipsel als Soundinstallation mehrkanalig zu hören sein und spekulative Verbindungen zwischen realen und imaginären autonomen Zonen herstellen.

together with my colleagues from the Futurama.Lab, Sabrina Rosina and Rainer Prohaska, I am giving a course at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in which we will investigate the ZAD, bolo'bolo and other radical ecological endeavors and their implication for ecological art practices. The course is open to all and we will read and discuss some fine texts together in a collective and enabling manner. This is not for students only, but for finding a common politco-aesthetical-utopian ground which is why I took the liberty to invite you all in this post.

SUSTAINABILITY - WHAT'S THE POINT OF ART?
A worshop at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna

Dear fellow artists, friends, colleagues, activists, environmentalists ...

We warmly invite you to this special lecture series hosted at the Academy of Fine Arts. In six sessions (three blocks of 2 modules) we will develop options and strategies within art projects as alternatives to a currently useless political and systemic approach. We demonstrate how to enable and possibly engage through artistic endeavors within the messiness of the now, how to nourish hope, humour and resilience and of coursehow to relate all this to current scientific developments in sustainable solutions.

We will investigate the cultural potential of the ZAD and bolo'bolo and will speculate about novel forms of radically ecological utopias and how to culturally produce them in a sustainable way.

Come along and journey with us through texts we will read and discuss together during lectures - from science-fiction to scientific papers and finally to practical realisations.

This course also serves as inspiration to further develop your own project(s) to be realized within the practical course of the following winter semester, forming a holistic workshop over the span of the year.

T.A.R. – Temporary Autonomous Region @Klimabiennale Wien

Together with the Futurama.Lab we are trying to learn from the ZAD NDDL and other radical-ecological practices for cultural production. For this reason, we have created a "Temporary Autonomous Region" at the Nord-West-Bahnhof-Gelände of the Klimabiennale (honestly as green-washed and extractivist an undertaking you can imagine under such a title...but we are trying to make the best out of it in our little zone) in which we will inhabit the space in manifold ways following Rainer Prohaskas Pool-principle. I am also curating a little discourse program around the topic in June of which I will inform you at a later stage. 

T.A.R. – Temporary Autonomous Region

T.A.R. ist eine Intervention, die am Gelände des Nordwestbahnhofs auf der begrünten Insel im Rahmen der KLIMA BIENNALE WIEN stattfindet. Eine ökologische Transformation erfordert die kunstvolle Schaffung alternativer Welten als Fluchtzonen aus der herrschenden, ökologisch katastrophalen Ordnung. Das FUTURAMA LAB baut einen experimentellen autonomen Lebensraum, der nicht nur den menschlichen Besucher*innen, sondern auch andere diversen Stadt-Bewohner*innen gewidmet ist. Ein Ort, in dem sich neue Werte, Rechte und Prioritäten entfalten können, aber auch ein Ruheraum für Festivalbesucher*innen, was für die Rolle einer "T.A.R." essentiell ist.

Begleitet wird diese reale Intervention von einem Diskursprogramm, bei dem die praktisch vorgelebten Konzepte theoretisch reflektiert und weitergedacht werden.

WHICH DANCES or how to imagine a future beyond extraction @Volkskundemuseum

I am very happy to join my long-time collaborator Sabina Holzer in her workshop week about Aluminum and Extractivism in Volkskunde Museum from 9th-14th of April. We have managed to invite my friend Esther Figueroa's film "Fly me to the Moon" and will host a somatic and theoretical workshop on the following day. We will think about possible futures beyond extractivism in which I will talk a little about my current researches about Zadism and radical activist cosmologies.

Zischende Klänge, funkelnde Lichter und schwerelose Beweglichkeit wollen sich der Schönheit des Materials, der Intelligenz des Bodens und der Erde, aus der es kommt, widmen. Es heißt ja, Metall habe kein Gedächtnis. Wir fragen, was würde uns Aluminium erzählen, wenn es eines hätte? Würden wir erfahren, dass der Bauxitabbau durch seine Auswirkungen auf Luft- und Wasserqualität, auf die Landwirtschaft und die Ökologie das Leben und die Lebensgrundlage der umliegenden Gemeinden beeinträchtigt? Würde es uns über die Zerstörung der letzten verbliebenen Naturgebiete in abgelegenen Teilen der Welt informieren? Würde es uns fragen, warum gleichzeitig riesige Mengen an Energie für die Herstellung eines Metalls verbraucht werden, das nur einigen Volkswirtschaften Wachstum und Modernisierung ermöglicht, und diese somit noch mehr Energie und Ressourcen erfordern? Würde es uns fragen, ob wir uns einen nachhaltigen Konsum überhaupt vorstellen können? Weil es eigentlich bedeutet, ein anderes Verständnis von Glück und Erfüllung entwickeln zu können, um so unserem Zusammenleben eine andere Richtung zu geben?

"Die Verbindungen, die befreien" - a new book project (?) with Michael Hirsch

 

It seems like I got myself into a new book project. After visiting Longo Mai together with Stoffwechsel and together and alone reading a lot of French literature about the ZAD, Michael Hirsch and me started to write a text that was supposed to be 10 pages but now has swollen to a size that can only be held by the form of the book. It is exciting to think together about this with Michael, because we have found a way to make our differences in thought and action communicate in a really productive way. He is more the leftist state-philosopher, while I am more on the anarchist movement side. But we both know that our thinking gets fuzzy, or imprecise, where the respective other's strengths lie. So we have engaged in a dialogue, using what is commonly thought to be inconsolable trenches as tools to think productive with - we are at the moment riding the contradictions between State and Anarchy, Reform and Revolution, Top-Down and Bottom-Up and love the sparks that emerge from the friction.
