soiled love: caring for the wound - 2.4.2025 with Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration

My work with Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration is going into its 10th year. After having visited various autonomous zones and other concrete utopias in resistance against the ecocidal status quo we have focused in the last two sessions on sites of struggle that have been lost - like Hirschstetten in Vienna. We want to invite you for a praxis of mourning and caring for the wound in togetherness on the 2nd of April.

In recent years, Stoffwechsel – Ecologies of Collaboration has investigated autonomous zones and spaces of resistance where different concepts of the future collide. Where old, modernist futurisms and new, ecological forms of life clash as resistant practices, wounds often appear that last much longer than the struggles over them. The Stoffwechsel collective has set itself the task of staying with these wounds and caring for them in a kind of witnessing: to be there for the feelings that arise in such places of devastation and upheaval of the landscape; to linger where no one wants to stay – close to and in the pure transit zones of urban planning.

In this spirit, we are making a pilgrimage for the second time to Hausfeldstraße, where another urban motorway is currently being built with a considerable structural intervention in the former village structure of Hirschstetten and where the occupations against the construction of the Lobau motorway tunnel took place in 2021.

We invite you to walk together, observe and perceive the still open wounds of an expanding city driven by automobilism and try to sense life and survival in these sacrificed zones.

STOFFWECHSEL Labor 2024 (part 2) – SOILED LOVE: ties that liberate, 15.11 17h

Next Friday, 15.11 at 17h, we will open up our second Stoffwechsel-Lab this year. Find more information below and here.

Over the past years, Stoffwechsel – Ecologies of Collaboration has explored autonomous zones and spaces of resistance, such as the anticapitalist agricultural cooperative Longo Maï and the Zone à Défendre (ZAD) at Notre-Dame-des-Landes, where activists fought against the construction of a new airport. This year, we expand our lens further and also include Indigenous protest camps in Canada, where new forms of autonomy, liberation, and environmental defense are being forged. These protest camps do more than block harmful infrastructures – they liberate our minds, opening up new ways of thinking and being in the world.

Our guest Anton Vandevoorde, whom we met this spring at the ZAD in France, explores with us how knowledge is produced in these autonomous zones and what happens when different worldviews and understandings of nature intersect or come into conflict.

We think not only about the ties between movements, but also about the bonds woven between movements, people, and the land itself. They are living networks that create new cultural expressions and experiment with alternative forms of social organization.

And what better place to celebrate these ties than at Lobau, where activists occupied construction sites in 2021/22 to resist a new highway. As we walk together through Lobau, we will honor the enduring legacy of these occupations, reflecting on how they continue to inspire and inform future movements.

Soiled Love: Eindrücke aus der ZAD

I've just spent two weeks in the ZAD Notre-Dame-de-Landes with my research cluster Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration. It was an amazing research experience and first impressions can be heard as a sound installation at our Futurama.Lab's Temporary Autonomous Region (TAR) at the Klima Biennale Wien, Nord-West-Bahnhof-Gelände, on the 25th and 26th of May from 17-22h.

"Die Verbindungen, die befreien" - a new book project (?) with Michael Hirsch

It seems like I got myself into a new book project. After visiting Longo Mai together with Stoffwechsel and together and alone reading a lot of French literature about the ZAD, Michael Hirsch and me started to write a text that was supposed to be 10 pages but now has swollen to a size that can only be held by the form of the book. It is exciting to think together about this with Michael, because we have found a way to make our differences in thought and action communicate in a really productive way. He is more the leftist state-philosopher, while I am more on the anarchist movement side. But we both know that our thinking gets fuzzy, or imprecise, where the respective other's strengths lie. So we have engaged in a dialogue, using what is commonly thought to be inconsolable trenches as tools to think productive with - we are at the moment riding the contradictions between State and Anarchy, Reform and Revolution, Top-Down and Bottom-Up and love the sparks that emerge from the friction.

The text is titled: "Die Verbindungen, die befreien - 'ZAD Partout' als politisches Programm" and we have now put some little excerpts online as part as the obligations to the process we have engaged with at Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration.

Find the text online and I hope you will be able to read about this project again in due time!

"Soiled love: May it last long" - Stoffwechsel Lab 2023

Part of my visit at Longo Mai this April/May I was able to spent with my long-time research cluster and good friends of "Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration". I remember our time in the french Provence, discussing forms of commoning, reading loads of texts on ZADism and smelling the fragrances of rosemary and lavender everywhere with such great intensity and fondness. I am particularly overjoyed to present some of our results at our Open Lab this year on 12th of September at im_flieger. Michael Hirsch and me are also now working on a text on ZADism which is turning longer and longer - it is one of these texts that have developed a life of their own and we are curious where it will lead us. We will present some of that text and its process at the Lab in the form of a discursive walk.

Find all info here.

The Provençal word Longo Mai means “May it last long” in English. This year, the metabolism collective is exploring the questions of soil and earth, radical ecology and concrete utopias of alternative forms of life. In this context, we also visited the Longo Mai commune as part of a working week in the south of France in June 2023 and got to know their experiment, which has now been going on for decades, with a different cultivation of the soil and a different collective way of life beyond growth, intensive agriculture and capitalist wage labor.

The lab focuses on speculative questions, practical exercises and experiences with the phenomena of earth, soil, land and home; “prefiguration” in the sense of models of future other ways of living in the now, and the productive tension between revolutionary-anarchist and radical-reformist models of action, politics and society.

We invite you to the practice of walking through the Vienna Woods followed by a gathering with food in the Im_flieger Studio. Our guest and discussion partner is Alexander Behr, political scientist, journalist and long-time member of the Longo Mai collective.

Stoffwechsel: "Normality" - with my digital presence from the boat

The second part of my wonderful research cluster's "Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration" full-year occupation with Normality will unfortunately happen without my physical presence, since I am still floating down the Danube (currently shortly before Lom, Bulgaria). However, I will be able to send some digital greetings / contributions both at the opening as well as the closing event. On the 15th, in two days, you will be able to hear the draft of the audio-composition I am putting together using the MS Fusion (and the winds and the waves) as an instrument. On the 21st I will "zoom in" (the new zooming out?) I will - most likely read some of that poem ("Die Donau hinab") I am writing along the kms of the river.

Find more details below and here.

We live between the suffering of normality and the dreams of another normality.
„What is normal, who is normal, who or what is not? What is a norm anyway?“ How is normality formed in society and what sets such processes in motion? Where are the boundaries of normality, how and through what are they shifted? To what extent can a life outside normality function? What role does art play in this field of reference?
The Denkkollektiv #7 explores the phenomena of normality and deviation from it as a construction of conforming and non-conforming ways of life. Of patterns of behavior, posture and movement of bodies, psyches, souls, couples, social groups, organizations and collectives.
„Normality“ oscillates between the terror of submission to a ruling norm on the one hand, and the longing for comforting habits and everyday rituals on the other. Normality is not an unchanging essence, but an ever-transforming process of intra- and extra-societal negotiation of values, boundaries, identities, and affiliations. All that we call normal today has by no means always been so and will not be so in the future. The collective experience of the suspension of so-called „normality“ by the state policies in the „Corona crisis“ of the last 2 years calls for renegotiation of normality, for impulses for new, processual normalities.
„What is normal for me?“ Based on the respective particular answers of the participants, the Denkkollektiv #7 artistically and reflectively explores present ways of life, and asks for new life possibilities.

Presenting "Visceral Fiction" at depot Vienna

This Thursday, we will have a release event of the book "Visceral Fiction" (edited by Anita Kaya, Johanna Nielson, Elisabeth Schäfer, Agnes Schneidewind and myself) at Vienna's depot. Find more information here.

20 years of artists‘ initiative Im_flieger: VISCERAL FICTION is an investigative review and research in the process of inscribing history/stories in, around and with Im_flieger. Im_flieger is a self-organised, rhizomatic platform and a body for dance, performance and transmedia art.

By means of interviews, conversations, images, and theoretical discourses, an activation of the network took place in a one-year research process, which we designed in analogy to a „detective agency“: People, spaces, artistic works, contents, … The past (even if only a fraction) gained attention, appreciation and relevance in the present.

The detectives, authors and conversation partners Robert Dressler, David Ender, Veza Fernández, Jack Hauser, Michael Hirsch, Sabina Holzer, Katrin Hornek, Kilian Jörg, Anita Kaya, Felix Kaya, Elke Krasny, Simon Mayer, Johanna Nielson, Martina Ruhsam, Elisabeth Schäfer, Sylvia Scheidl, Agnes Schneidewind and Sabine Sonnenschein ask about the discursive potential of self-organization, artistic work, its formats, conditions of production, and about the significance of art and artists‘ organizations and spaces as decentralized movements in the cultural-political field and all the relationships that derive from them. But above all: what kind of poetics does the process of this detective investigation require?

Even if we, artists and curators, cannot solve the major social problems into whose abyss we are currently looking with art, we can at least uncover the mechanisms, hierarchies and structures in and with which we work, become aware of them, change them, refuse them, realise others. Museums and theatres – as traditional, ritual spaces and places of assembly in Western society – serve to rehearse the values that are relevant to each society.

What new rituals and places of assembly does our contemporary society need and what new social order is to be rehearsed?

How can artistic and curatorial creation connect with society, the world, in a different way and become effective?

How can artistic and curatorial practice be developed to build a sustainable dialogue between artists and audiences?

How can artistic practices and methods be experienced as an essential part of our social life together?

How can art no longer be received as a closed system, but be recognised in its interactive research and transformation potential, and become relevant to social issues and processes?

How do we work on the community, on the social order?

It’s not about giving answers. It’s time for a break in the space-time continuum, but, … will you ever be the same when you return?

The 7th Edition of our format "thought collective" of the ongoing research plattform "Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration" is taking place next week. This time, we focus on the large concept of "normality" and I will engage with the question of what happens when we consider "normality as catastrophe" with my key-metaphor of the year: car-centered mobility.

Welche Rolle spielt Kunst in diesem Bezugsfeld?

VISCERAL FICTION - Book Release this Saturday!

After 2 years of collective research & editorial work, I am very happy to announce that we will release the bilingual book "VISCERAL FICTION - Im_Flieger schreibt Geschichten" at Monochrom this Saturday. The book is about the utopia and reality of free cultural production, the necessity of nurture and off-spaces, artistic work and freedom. In a very specific collective process we called the "detective bureau" our team of 6 editors complied a very innovative and joyful publication about the various wonderings of performance and trans-media art in "our" neoliberal time characterized by growing (ecological & economic) precariousness.

STOFFWECHSEL Denkkollektiv #6 – Neue Vorsicht? (On Touch #2)

I am very happy to be able to further pursue one of the topics which already occupy me for years at the next Stoffwechsel-Denkkollektiv with Michael Hirsch an the entire Stoffwechsel collective. Under the title Nietzsches Neue Vorsicht I am - together with, partly, Jorinde Schulz and Michael Hirsch, pursuing a philosophy of the necessity of looking away (and thus filtering) FOR political activism in order to be effective. It is some sort of an apology of the bubble which tries to seek to develop an ethics of politically enabling acting and transforming in the very messy time called the Anthropocene. I hope I will be, at some point, able to condense this in some kind of finished & cohesive publication. The next landmark can be revisited at the public presentation after our week-long research lab. Find more information below or here.

Di 22. bis Sa 26.6.2021 // künstlerische Forschung
Sa 26.6.2021 // 17.00 // OPEN LAB

„N e u e V o r s i c h t.

Denkkollektiv #5 – touched - 16.-20.2.2021 at im_flieger Vienna

Our research cluster Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration is inviting you to it's fifth thought-collective - due to the ongoing corona lockdowns and massive restrictions for cultural production, you can unfortunately only visit us online next Saturday....

Denkkollektiv #5 – touched

(Wer/Was berührt wen oder was?)

Philosophy Unbound #24 - MAKING KIN

I am very happy to announce that - as Philosophy Unbound - we will be organizing our second festival. After New Delhi last year, this time we will hold it in Vienna, the city were our collective first started from. The topic will be devoted to Donna Haraway's concept of MAKING KIN and it will take place at Schikaneder from 24th to 26th of May 2019.
Afterwards the festival will continue in the location of the other collective I am involved in: Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration will perform a "thought collective"in the 4 days after the festival from 27th to 30th of May!

Make kin, not babies - this is Donna Haraway’s appeal in times of growing ecological and political devastation. Make kin in unhinged times! Philosophy Unbound invites you to think together about community, new commitments and alliances beyond the traditional forms of family, patriarchy and established institutions. Who may consider whom family and in what context? Who is allowed to declare solidarity with whom? To team up? To rely on one another? And who is actually “fix zam”?

In the radically new and catastrophic times which we’re trying to grasp with names like Anthropocene and Capitalocene, new forms of sharing the world, world-participation and response-ability are needed to enable the art of living and dying well for as many earthly critters as possible. How do we recollect ourselves on this poisoned, devastated, ruined planet? How do we want to imagine a common life and death beyond toxic norms? How can we create security and shelter beyond the biological family? How can queer ways of life reconcile us with the Chaosmos? How can newly created cooperations take a stand against resistance? And what happens if the newly established wants to dissolve again but can’t or isn’t allowed to?

Cultural Workers Unite!: A Plea for a Voluntary Artist Solidarity Fund (ASF)

Together with Michael Hirsch I have published a manifesto proposing how to cope with growing precarity in a neoliberal art world. We conceive a voluntary Artist Solidarity Fund (ASF) as part of the coming New Deal designed to combat a future of gross inequality. As such we see it as one of many patches of a manifold utopian horizon needed for contemporary progressive politics. Cultural Workers Unite!

This manifesto can be found on e-flux and will hopefully soon spread its message...

"Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration" @ SOHO in Ottakring-Festival 2018

In the third year of our transdisciplinary research project "Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration" we decided to open up the format and visit festivals to engage with the public in a larger scheme. For this purpose, we will be present & researching during the whole span of the two week SOHO in Ottakring-Festival starting this Saturday! Drop by anytime during the opening hours - we will be there and happy to exchange!

My personal research topic will this time be the simple word "We" / "Wir", which somehow also had an explosive role within our research assemblage as well as it does on a larger political spectrum. After investigating on "reasons" / "Vernünfte" last time, I am organically transitioning to the "We". The German word "Vernunft" etymologically derives from "Vernehmen", which is not far from "Einvernehmen", the condition required behind a WE. I will engage with the environment of the festival (the Sandleitenhof, one of Vienna's oldest social housing projects) to investigate what could be a new kind of "Einvernehmen" to create a WE, that escapes the politically dangerous tendencies of a separation of "US" and "THEM".

A short publication on the field of the "WIR" - written in collaboration with Yasmin Ritschl, who will continue to collaborate from the distance - can already be found here. More updates of the project coming soon!

stffwchsl WERKSTATT #3 goes SOHO in Ottakring
- an artistic workshop wants to be visited and expend itself www.stffwchsl.net

In cooperation with Soho in Ottakring Festival “Jenseits des Unbehagens. Arbeiten an der Gemeinschaft."

stffwchsl WERKSTATT #3 is artistic workshop and work at the same time. 7 artists from different disciplines open their artistic practice and cordially invite the visitors to be part of their research and to enter into dialogue. We want to draw attention to the desire  for a “stable and ideal world” shared by all, and its always necessarily processual state. This potential conflict also influences the discussion of artistic practice:  the claim and the expectations of a work as process is opposed to that of a communicable product ready to be consumed by an audience. stffwchsl WERKSTATT #3 researches art as a practice of life and follows the conviction that sharing artistic processes (as a work of art) enhances our view of the world. How can a different understanding of the world and its potentials of community be experienced?

stffwchsl WERKSTATT #3 is part of the transmedia research project STOFFWECHSEL- Ecologies of Collaboration with differently involved artists and theoreticans, experimenting with structural and artistic entanglements.
