"Nature is a Beast" @ Esistenza Integrale, Bildraum Studio

I am glad to announce that we will premiere our film about the relation produced by the car to "Nature" - now titled "Nature is a Beast" at the group-exhibition of the Futurama.Lab at the Bildraum Studio of Ankerbrotfabrik, Vienna. The opening is on the 23rd of May and the exhibition is running until the 16th of June. Find all the infos as well as the other participating artists as well as the location here

Here are some infos & stills of our film:

Nature is a beast

by Kollektiv Auto Affaire (Guus Diepenmaat, Kilian Jörg, Viktor Kössl, Sandra Sieczkowski)

The essayistic experimental film “Nature is a beast” examines the modern relation to the environment with a focus on the car. Shot in the National Park Hohe Tauern, the film somatically explores our entanglement with lifeforms that make us desire solutions who are themselves part of the larger ecological problem. This film is motivated by the intuition that the problem of the car is not its exhaust fumes, but that it produces Nature as a modern object of veneration in itself. We want to protect Nature in the same manner we feel the desire to “go to Nature” when we want to relax and get away from our busy lifes. Motorized with fossil-fueled engines, every citizen of modern states can now approach spots of “pristine wilderness” that have been deemed inaccessible or even forbidden and ugly in earlier times. Nature thus becomes an object of consumption not unlike any other product of late capitalism.

The film tries to approach the contradictions and unacknowledged collaborations of our modern souls in a sometimes hypnotic, sometimes humoristic manner and tries to shake what we cosmologically deem to be self-evident.

Active Travel Academy external seminar – The Car and the Ecological Catastrophe – 29th May, 5-6.30 pm (CET)

On the 29th of May, 17-18:30 CET, I have to honor to present my upcoming book at the Active Travel Academy of the University of Westminster! The talk will be online, so please tune in from wherever you are. Find all the details here.

In this external seminar, the artist and philosopher Kilian Jörg will present some key concepts from his forthcoming book “The Car and the Ecological Catastrophe“. The book seeks to understand the car as a key element in why modernity is stuck in an ecologically catastrophic lifestyle. Rather than being a mere machine among others, the car can be seen as a prosthesis that produces a hegemonic relationship with the environment and has produced the “Homogenocene”. In this sense, the problem of the car is not its exhaust fumes, but that it produces Nature as a consumer product. Kilian will develop this thesis by showing the recently made film “Nature is a beast” (by the collective Auto Affaire) and will elaborate on the history of its development, with a special focus on the history of fascism, the quelling of rebellion in the early days of automobility, our mundane affective entanglement through pop culture, and the sensual normalisation of the current hegemonial mobility system. Drawing on examples of recent activism, they will conclude by outlining some horizons for a future of more sustainable, joyful and plural relations and ways of moving through a planet in ecological crisis.

Soiled Love: Eindrücke aus der ZAD

I've just spent two weeks in the ZAD Notre-Dame-de-Landes with my research cluster Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration. It was an amazing research experience and first impressions can be heard as a sound installation at our Futurama.Lab's Temporary Autonomous Region (TAR) at the Klima Biennale Wien, Nord-West-Bahnhof-Gelände, on the 25th and 26th of May from 17-22h.

Landing in Ecocide? - 20th of May @ im_flieger

After some times of trouble and conflict, we came out more precise and stronger in our ongoing research project called LANDEN, now "Landing in Ecocide?". I cordially want to invite you to our next open session on the 20th of May at im_flieger - find all the details here.

Photo: Johanna Nielson

The distress of the ecological catastrophe is omnipresent but still – is there really no alternative to the Status Quo? How to land in troubled waters? How to find roots and grounds in the ecocidal winds of the now? Is indigeneity something people from a Central European context can even possibly seek? How can we develop our sensibilities to find the cracks that open up everywhere for new, resistant life to sprout? How to cultivate new alliances with those that invade and contradict the hegemonial order? In this edition of the interdisciplinary research project Landen, we seek the calming sounds that hurl even in the most turbulent whirlwinds and will develop songs of new beauty with them. We will plant seeds in the most brutal concrete forms of modernity and will scrutinize our everyday action for complacency with a self-destroying system. Join us on the very shaky grounds that reek of a strange and slimy paradise.
