"An Ecology of Moralizing" @ queer museum vienna, 25.6.2026

I am very happy and honored to share our "An Ecology of Moralizing" workshop and lecture at Vienna's wonderful queer museum! It will take place next Thursday, 25th of June, from 18h - there will be food and pleasant company - all you need for building new and queer mores (lat. "customs")! (Maybe this is also a good opportunity to announce that we have now been offered a contract for our book - it will come out with Duke University Press next year - yey!)

 

An Ecology of Moralizing - A participative lecture & workshop by Kilian Jörg (and Alexis Shotwell, in absence)

Have you ever felt you are moralizing whether you wanted it or not? When you stood out as an example in ecological behavior or just made an irritated face at a racist or sexist comment? Morality and moralizing have for the longest time been perceived as the purview of the conservatives and the pursed-lips privileged prude. It was used against us queer and progressives. But in recent times this seems to have changed. Conservatives are more and more panicking about what they perceive as "woke" moralizing and scolding. Furthermore, fascist movements such as Trumpism can be understood - in part - as motivated by a rebellion against this perceived moralizing. How did we get there? Is it actually bad to talk about what would be a good way to live together?

We want to stay with the cringyness of moralizing impulses and explore what somatically takes place in us, inbetween us and around us if we moralize - or decide to not moralize. Thinking with movies like "Pride" (in which building morale is an essential part of coalitions between coal miners in the countryside and queers in the city), we want to think about the role of moralizing in our society. We want to speculate about more inclusive forms of building mores (=the etymological root of morals meaning something like "customs") together to build a more open and resisting society in times of rising fascism and moral depravity of the capitalist elite. In this workshop, we want to discuss personal experiences with moralizing - whether good or bad and propose a queer project of building morale through better understanding and practicing moralizing.

"Die Perchtentracht war etwas wirklich ganz besonderes..." Radio-Conversation with Julia Grillmayr at Radio Orange

 

I am kind of secretive and shy about it, but I am working, on and off, on a novel for already more then ten years which is...probably too weird to ever see the light of day :) Anyways, upon invitation of Julia Grillmayr, I dare to read an extract of it in her radioshow, the Science Fiction Book Club. We will discuss the role of traditions in speculative literature, but also left-wing radical politics. This is something I am more and more curious about, since I see a lot of reluctance to think openly about tradition in the German and English-speaking Left, while in France and Spain I perceive a much more relaxed and open, embracing relation to it. This continues to fascinate me. And I am very much looking forward to discuss these questions with a mind and brilliant as Julia's - you can also call during the show!

"Zukunft für alle: Demokratie und/oder Utopien, die verbinden?" @PMK Innsbruck, 18.6.2026

Ich freue mich schon sehr darauf, mit meinen Freund*innen vom Kulturkollektiv Contrapunkt und Judith Götz nöchste Woche über Utopien und eine potentielle, radikale Weiterentwicklung der Demokratie in Innsbruck zu sprechen! 

"Im Zentrum der gemeinsamen Kooperationsveranstaltung steht die Frage, wie Demokratie unter gegenwärtigen gesellschaftlichen Spannungen weitergedacht werden kann – nicht als abstraktes Ideal, sondern als gelebte Praxis, die möglichst viele Perspektiven einbindet. Die Veranstaltung lädt dazu ein, diese Fragen gemeinsam zu diskutieren und neue Ansätze für demokratische Zukunftsentwürfe zu entwickeln.Gemeinsam mit unseren Gästen Kilian Jörg und Judith Goetz werden demokratische Ansätze diskutiert, die versuchen, polarisierende Gegensätze zu überwinden und dadurch auf breite gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz abzielen - mit dem Ziel, mehr Menschen zu erreichen. Dabei rücken Utopien in den Fokus, die inklusiv und nachhaltig gedacht sind, unterschiedliche Lebensrealitäten und größtmögliche Vielfalt von Lebensweisen und Welten berücksichtigen. 

Die beiden Diskutant*innen werden sich dabei auf konkrete Beispiele aus ihren eigenen Forschungen und Erfahrungen beziehen. Kilian Jörg wird insbesondere auf das gemeinsam mit Michael Hirsch verfasste Buch Durchlöchert den Status Quo (2025) eingehen – ein Werk, das an die Kämpfe der ZAD in Frankreich anknüpft und dazu ermutigt, jenseits der scheinbaren Ausweglosigkeit des kapitalistischen Realismus neue politische Möglichkeitsräume zu denken. Judith Goetz hingegen bringt Erfahrungen ein, die sie im April 2025 während einer Delegationsreise in die autonome Selbstverwaltung von Rojava (Nordostsyrien) gesammelt hat. Dort begegnete sie einem gelebten gesellschaftlichen Entwurf, der auf Frauenrechten, ethnischer Vielfalt, ökologischer Nachhaltigkeit und basisdemokratischen Strukturen beruht – ein Modell, das ihre Perspektiven auf demokratische Transformation nachhaltig erweitert hat. Rojava und der ZAD sollen  als Orientierungspunkte dienen für eine Diskussion über Utopien in Demokratien. Auch die Rolle staatlicher Institutionen wird reflektiert – insbesondere im Hinblick auf ihre Offenheit gegenüber Impulsen aus der Zivilgesellschaft, utopischen Entwürfen und experimentellen Räumen, in denen neue Formen des Zusammenlebens erprobt werden. Welche Formen von Teilhabe sind denkbar, die nicht nur engagierte Minderheiten erreichen? Wie lassen sich visionäre Ideen so formulieren, dass sie im Alltag anschlussfähig bleiben?"
