Performance-artist Beate Ronacher has been run over by a car while doing a public space performance that involved lying down on the street in a backyard. The driver (a priest!) has claimed that he mistook her for a display dummy and the court opts for an out-of-court settlement. This trivialization of car-based violence reveals a lot about the toxic normality of fossil-fueled capitalism. Read more about it in my interview with Beate for skug (in German).
In my contribution to the 4th Editon of Mathes&Seitz' magazine DRITTE NATUR, I philosophically examine the notion of the world's end and it's contemporary eco-apocalyptic variants as in "5 to 12"-rhetorics. With the help of Donna Haraway, Eduardo Viveiro de Castro and Deborah Danowski I argue that we need to develop a philosophical reasoning behind the end of the world. In getting rid of the end of the world as a unitary concept, we can develop a pluralized and more inclusive philosophy of many worlds, reasonings, sciences and natures that form a patchy chaosmology beyond the apocalyptic Anthropocene. This point is illustrated with examples from nuclear semiotics & current eco-capitalist politics of attempting to save the Alpine glaciers and Danube river banks via geo-engineering the otherwise crumbling Status Quo into an "everlasting" zombie.

Next Thursday, the 18th of November, I will give a talk about Conspiracy Theories and their relation to ecological crisis together with the sinologist and literary theorist Johannes Kaminski at the Lectures4Future. I will depart from my recently completed PhD "Affirmation of Ecological Reasonings", which breaks with a classical enlightenment picture of ONE Reason as opposed to many stories and instead seeks to understand conspiracy theories through the prism of pluralized reasonings and their relation towards eco-sensitive story-telling. This will lead me to develop quite unconventional strategies of countering and re-affirming conspiracy theories that are inspired by situated knowledge and affect theory. In the end, I will give examples from contemporary art works.

Ecospiracy: Das konspirative Klima im Anthropozän

Durch die ökologische Krise werden nicht nur immer mehr Lebenswelten prekär, sondern auch epistemische Grundmauern und Referenzsysteme: kaum etwas erscheint als einfach gegeben und unumstößlich real und wirklich.
Die ökologische Krise stellt nicht allein die Logik der extraktivistischen Globalwirtschaft in Frage, sondern rüttelt auch an den Möglichkeiten von Kritik und Erkenntnis. In dieser Zeit sprießen die Verschwörungstheorien allerorts, unter anderen die Idee des Great Reset, der zufolge die Bevölkerung demnächst zu nachhaltigen Lebensweisen gezwungen werden soll.1 Überhaupt handle es sich beim Klimawandel um eine chinesische Verschwörung, die den alleinigen Zweck verfolge, die US-amerikanische Wirtschaft zu schwächen.2 In China wiederum hieß es lange Zeit, internationale Maßnahmen gegen den Klimawandel dienten allein dem westlichen Anliegen, den Aufstieg Chinas zu verhindern.3 In Anbetracht solcher gewaltiger Narrative wirken europäische Initiativen wie der Action Plan against Disinformation wie ein hilfloser Versuch, den Geist der Aufklärung wiederzubeleben.
Wir fragen uns: Welche affektive Funktion erfüllen Verschwörungen in einer Situation der existenziellen Verunsicherung? Können sie auch Bewusstsein für tatsächlichen Machtmissbrauch fördern, wie Klein, Clutton und Dunn behaupten?4 Inwiefern bildet das Grundgefühl der Verschwörung ein authentisches Gefühl ab, das nicht zwingend in Verleugnung münden muss, sondern auch für eine ökologische Agenda eingespannt werden kann? Welches epistemische Potential haben Verschwörungstheorien für künstlerische und spekulative Arbeit?
Für ein erfolgreiches world building im und jenseits des Anthropozäns wollen wir aktuelle künstlerische Arbeiten (z.B. von der österreichischen Video-Künstlerin Karin Ferrari) rund um Verschwörungstheorien reflektieren und ein spekulative Begehren in ihnen verorten. Durch dieses künstlerisch-forschende Prisma deutet sich die Möglichkeit an, das konspirative Klima des Anthropozäns für emanzipatorische Praktiken zu kultivieren, ohne sich bloß an alten Denkbildern von Aufklärung und debunking zu orientieren.

17th of September is International PARK(ing) Day and I have been invited by wonderful im_flieger to give a little performative lecture about the implicit sensory normalization of our urban public spaces and performative interventions to break with them / reflect them critically. I will talk about my book Backlash - Essays zur Resilienz der Moderne and my performance research with David Kummer Diverting the Public Space. Since last Monday brave activists are blocking and occupying the construction of the Lobau-highway - a crazy dinosaur-modernist project (its original name was in fact "Reichsautobahn" and yes - it was first designed in this awful time) that seeks to build a highway through Vienna's only National park.
That this has to be stopped is of course no question - and so I invite everybody in and around Vienna to come to the climate camp, show our solidarity and occupy with us! The climate camp itself is actually really nice to hang out - you can find it at Anfanggasse 2 in 1220 Vienna.
On Thursday and Friday, 11-13h me and my friend Johannes Siegmund from Philosophy Unbound will hold little philosophical lectures on climate issues. I will talk about the Utopia of the car-free world (Friday), and Johannes about the relation of climate change, migration and racism (Thursday). Come bye and bring your tent - there is still a lot of space and the weather is nice!
Next week I will have a guest appearance in Austria's first national radio station, at the Ö1 Radiokolleg on "Das spekulative Zeitalter" ("The speculative age"), made by the wonderful Julia Grillmayr.
I will talk briefly about speculation as an artistic and philosophical strategy in and beyond the Anthropocene (as in my project Toxic Temple) and about the relation of conspiracy theories and a generally acknowledged need for speculative story-telling. By this I try to develop an approach of thinking with (as opposed to: against) conspiracy theories that is more productive than "mere" reactionary debunking in the tradition of an old notion of enlightenment ("Aufklärung") - later this year I will also give a lecture on this topic at the Lectures for Future in Vienna together with Johannes Kaminski - stay tuned.

Yesterday I was invited to discuss the mediatization of the climate catastrophe with filmmaker Zara Zandieh at Deutschlandfunk Kultur's "Lakonisch, Elegant". We discussed what the (potentially heteronormative & reactionary) impact of Hollywood-like images of catastrophe might be and how an ethics of inter-relational, postcolonial and queer story-telling needs to be developed to devise an engaging discussion of the ongoing climate catastrophe.
*Disclaimer: in the heat of discussion (and the actual hot weather) I claimed that China rudimentarily also developed a concept of "Nature" similar to that of European modernity. This, however, was a mistake, at least judging from the interpretation of Francois Jullien on that matter. I apologize!
Next week I am honored to be able to performatively research and work with David Kummer on a topic I have so far mainly touched in theoretical (as in my Backlash-book) and interventionist / activist manners: that of the transformation of our public space as the "smallest unit" of our anthropogenic environmental entanglement.
We are entangled with the spaces around us. We are the public, we have our spaces.
The public space enables us and limits us - it makes us what we are.
But, in times of ecological turmoil, are our spaces changing fast enough with us? Do they adapt (us) well to the new chaotic climates of the Earth? Or do they make us stuck in the values and practices of an old, fossil fueled and consumerist way of life?
Space is inert. We tend to become inert with it.
How can we engage it to change - with - us - and the world ?
Through a spectrum of shared bodily practices in public space, we seek to enable new modes of action and perception, which should lead to a self-empowerment of the participants and an invitation to dialogue and engagement with pedestrians. Together, old patterns of movement in public space will be questioned and a new playful and at the same time critical physicality will be explored. The developed and guided scores shall give the possibility to inscribe oneself deeply into the public space in a different way and to practice and experience a choreographic perception. The space, being transformed into a versatile adventure playground (for big and small), is meant to open utopian windows of possibility for a different "fusion" with our human-made, urban environment and the questioning of its norms.
After our week-long research we will do a public presentation on Friday the 16th of July 2021 at 17h at Im_Flieger, Bräuhausgasse 40, 1050 Vienna. More information (in German and English) here.
I am very happy to be able to further pursue one of the topics which already occupy me for years at the next Stoffwechsel-Denkkollektiv with Michael Hirsch an the entire Stoffwechsel collective. Under the title Nietzsches Neue Vorsicht I am - together with, partly, Jorinde Schulz and Michael Hirsch, pursuing a philosophy of the necessity of looking away (and thus filtering) FOR political activism in order to be effective. It is some sort of an apology of the bubble which tries to seek to develop an ethics of politically enabling acting and transforming in the very messy time called the Anthropocene. I hope I will be, at some point, able to condense this in some kind of finished & cohesive publication. The next landmark can be revisited at the public presentation after our week-long research lab. I have been invited to give a talk about the postcoronal outlooks and take-aways for club, night, and rave culture by the wonderful people of Kulturkollektiv CONTRAPUNKT of Innsbruck. In the words of Jara the article "is about the tricky questions regarding ethical judgements, reasonability, differing positions of the leftists towards state-imposed restrictions and the necessity to think critically about generalisations such as “the health care system” and “responsibility”.
"I have the feeling that the growing (and very worrying) polarization and nervousness of society is also a result of not looking and differentiating carefully enough. We tend to put people into abstract boxes we took from elsewhere without looking at their personal histories, experiences, fears and motivations. Social media and social distancing accelerate this superficial mode of “social boxing” a lot.
If we would instead look and talk with them, we might understand their personal relation to this unprecedented time that is stressful to us all and makes us react in various chaotic and difficult manners. We might learn to understand that person A’s particular aversion towards state restrictions stems a lot from her traumas of a past totalitarian state she or her ancestors might have suffered under. Or that person B’s very strict obedience can – among other factors – also be explained as a certain rebellion against the “I don’t give a fuck” mentality of her closest relatives. Every position, situation and fear are understandable if we take care and time to trace them back to its specific ecology. Such a practice of differentiating and examining more carefully and closely is an ethical counter-practise to the current hegemony of too-quick generalizations and judgements."

This Friday I will have a public discussion I am especially looking forward to. Stefanie Graefe, author of "Resilienz im Krisenkapitalismus" and me will try to discuss the difficult aspects, political problems and at the same time the lure of the booming concept of resilience. Stefanie and me come from quite far apart backgrounds and approaches, however, we both feel that we are intuitively touching something very similar in our approaches. Es hat - aufgrund coronaler Wirrungen - ungewöhnlich lange gedauert, aber es ist nun endlich die erste Rezension meines Buchs "Backlash - Essays zur Resilienz der Moderne" erschienen.
"Was interessiert Viren und Bakterien, die auch nach einem Weltuntergang (realer, nicht religiöser Art) ihren Platz in der Ökologie unseres Planeten finden werden, eine Identität als alter weißer Mann oder als umweltbewusster, aber fremdenfeindlicher Volkskernmann, der sich gegen die eigene Bedeutungslosigkeit auflehnt, dafür ihm nicht genehme Lebensentwürfe und Herkünfte nicht nur diskreditiert, sondern diffamiert, in dem Glauben, dadurch an Lebensqualität und Planetenzeit zu gewinnen? Kein Stück. Sie laben sich am verendenden Leben und bauen aus der gefallenen Zivilisation eine neue Umwelt. Jörg erkennt dies und fordert einen neuen Experimentierraum, in dem eben ein Vorwärtssprung und nicht ein Rückfall möglich wird. [...] Den Anker werfen wir zu den Gefährten rüber, die unter Wagemut eben nicht Ausbeutung verstehen, sondern die gemeinsame Reise, auch durch unwegsames Terrain. Denkkollektiv #5 – touched
Berührung bedeutet sich körperlich und geistig in einem Gefüge zu verorten und sich auf Menschliches und Nichtmenschliches zu beziehen. In Berührung liegt die Möglichkeit zu kontaktieren aber auch – und vielleicht noch mehr – kontaktiert zu werden. (Wer/Was berührt wen oder was?)
Berührung ist nicht immer sichtbar und touch und being touched finden auch – und vielleicht noch mehr – im Verborgenen statt.
Auf welche Weisen können wir in pandemischen Zeiten berühren und berührt werden, wenn geplante, gewohnte und zufällige zwischenmenschliche Berührungen und Begegnungen wegfallen? Welche Alltagspraxen hat die Pandemie dazu hervorgebracht? Haben Augenkontakt, Formen sprachlicher Berührung oder Self Touch an Relevanz gewonnen?
Welche Bedingungen braucht es grundsätzlich, um für Berührung offen zu bleiben … ?

In der Fiktion "Postcoronale Schambereiche" halluziniere ich mit Johannes Kaminski über die dystopischen Folgen der Maskenpflicht in einer Zeit ökologischer Prekarität und allgemeiner Verunsicherung.
"Robert war draußen, bei den echten Menschen in der harten Realität aufgewachsen, wo man noch mit den eigenen Nasenlöchern atmete. Nur die Arkologist*innen verdeckten Mund und Nase bereits ab der Geburt, teilten nicht einmal mit der eigenen Familie ungeschützt die Atemluft. Er aber träumte noch immer davon, ungefilterte Luft zu atmen, die heiß in die Nebenhöhlen steigt. Manchmal stand er im kühlen Labor und hatte auf einmal den Geschmack von Sand auf der Zunge."

Im Essay "Die hilflose Huldigung der Apparate" (so mein Originaltitel, den die Berliner Gazette für ihre Linie passend umgewandelt hat) argumentiere ich das folgende:
"Die Coronakrise führt uns diese Problematik des Apparats, an den sich das post-post-moderne Leben schon scheinbar gewöhnt hat, in neuer Virulenz vor Augen. Es lässt sich zwar einfach beziffern, wie viele Menschen in einem Land Covid-19 positiv getestet wurden und damit (nicht zwingend daran) gestorben sind. Der Apparat kann mit dieser monokausalen Engführung funktionieren und der Gesellschaft seine Logiken aufzwingen. Eine Zusammenführung aller Problematiken und Schäden, die durch die Coronarestriktionen entstehen und die psychologischen, sozialen, sexistischen, kulturellen und wirtschaftlichen Langzeitfolgen mit einschließt, ist jedoch keineswegs in einer einfachen Zahlenrelation darzustellen und fällt daher aus dem Blickfeld einer in Apparaten organisierten Gesellschaft."

Aufbauend auf der Recherche rund um das multimediale ongoing project „Toxic Temple“ wollen Anna Lerchbaumer und Kilian Jörg die Verbindung von Spiritualität und Toxizität akustisch und poetisch für‘s Format des Ö1 Kunstradios ausloten.
Inmitten von menschengemachten und alles betreffenden Katastrophen planetarischen Ausmaßes sehen wir uns in der Lage, die Ereignisse mit Hilfe von technischen Geräten aufzuzeichnen und zu dokumentieren. Der Ökollaps entzieht sich zunehmend unserem Fassungsvermögen, dafür zerstückeln wir ihn in leicht konsumierbare mediale Häppchen kodiert in Radiowellen, Binärcodes und Stromimpulsen. Ohne genau zu wissen, was wir tun können, benennen wir unseren katastrophalen Zustand mit abstrakten Begriffen wie „planetare Auslöschung“ und „globaler Klimawandel“. Die Zahlen und Daten sind im Übermaß vorhanden, der sinnliche Bezug fehlt allerdings oftmals.
Kann man die Erderwärmung im Rauschen der Klimaanlage hören? Was sagt das stetige, aber nicht monotone Brummen des unsere Moderne antreiben Stroms über unsere prekäre Lage globaler Vernetztheit? Die 50 Hz als Hymne der Moderne? Verbringt sich im Knittern des alleinsetzbaren Plastiks eine übermenschliche Transzendenz? Das periodische Aussterben der terrestrischen Biomasse als Antrieb für kurze, technologieschwere Modernen?
Wie kommuniziert sich die übermenschlich lange Katastrophe? Wie wird sie medial portraitiert? In Fieldrecordings, Cut-Ups aus Medienberichten, Gedicht-Gebeten an das Gift, das Öl, das Plastik und den Atommüll sowie Aufnahmen von ihrer Funktion befreiter Maschinen loten wir aus, wie es sich unterhalb der glatten Oberfläche der Moderne anhört. Ein Spekulieren über die Sprache in der Black-Box, eine Umdrehung der Zeithorizonte und Werteskalen der Moderne: inwiefern kommiuniziert das uns überlebende Toxische an ein menschliches Jenseits? Wir examinieren die Maschinen und modernen Konsumartikel abseits von ihrem kurzen Auftritt auf den Bühnen des globalen Kapitalismus: von der geologischen Entstehung ihrer Grundressourcen, deren Abbau und Ausbeutungsverhältnissen, bis hin zu den Recylclinghöfen und Müllhalden als Vorboten der „Anthropozän“-Schicht. Eine akustisch-spirituelle Exkursion in mannigfaltige Grenzgebiete der unter Strom stehenden und sich auf die Erdschichten abdrückenden Menschenwelt.
