"Was können wir von der pandemischen Abstandskultur für den Umgang mit der Öko-Katastrophe lernen?"

"Wann wird eine kompromisslos und unabdingbar vorpreschende Haltung zum Problem? Wieviel Filterarbeit und Blasenbildung braucht ein effizienter Aktivismus? Und wann und wie kann Sich-Raushalten nicht als stillschweigendes Einlenken mit der furchtbaren Norm, sondern als notwendiges Fokussieren und Konzentrieren der Kräfte für den Kampf um Veränderung verstanden werden?

Grundannahme einer hier tentativ skizzierten Ethik einer Neuen Vorsicht ist, dass es das Bedürfnis nach Desinvolvierung stets und in egal welchem politischen Lager gibt, es bislang aber noch kaum gelungen ist, dieses Bedürfnis auf einen progressiv-emanzipatorischen Begriff zu bringen."

Nach meinem Vortrag in Innsbruck zu "there is no rave on a dead planet" und dem für mich sehr inspirierenden Austausch mit einer paar spannenden Leuten der ErdeBrennt-Bewegung, habe ich ein paar Gedanken zu Subkultur und Ökologie niedergeschrieben, die nun in der TELEPOLIS erschienen sind.

 

"Aktivisten der Letzten Generation pfeifen auf die Vernunft der Mehrheitsgesellschaft und sind damit vielleicht auf der Spur einer wichtigen kulturellen Innovation." "In der Gesellschaftsordnung des liberalen Kapitalismus ist es gleichzeitig vernünftig, ein akademisches Paper über die katastrophalen Auswirkungen von fossilen Brennstoffen zu veröffentlichen und seine Pension durch das Investieren bei Shell und Gasprom zu sichern."

 

Zu selten denke ich zwei meiner Forschungsinteressen - die ökologische Katastrophe einerseits und Subkulturen andererseits - gemeinsam. Hier ist mir das mal wieder gelungen. Ich glaube, dass öko-aktivistische Strömungen zur Zeit das Potential haben / sich gedrängt dazu fühlen, die herrschende Vernunft zu verweigern. Dies birgt natürlich viele Gefahren, doch wenn man es richtig framed, birgt es ebenso großes Potential. Denn mit einer Verweigerung der herrschenden Vernunft hinterfragt man auch die hegemoniale Triade von Wisschenschaft-Natur-Vernunft und ihr koloniales Erbe. Damit würde sich die bisher zu meinem großen Leidwesen theoretisch eher unterreflektierte Öko-Aktivismus-Szene an andere Diskurse und Kämpfe intersektional anschließbarer machen und so einige blinde Flecken ihrer vielfach weißen Priviliegien reflektieren können. Es ist meines Erachtens also Zeit, die Öko-Aktivsmus-Szene theoretisch besser zu informieren - "Wir wollen die Natur beschützen" ist nicht mehr genug. Stattdessen werfen wir lieber Tomatensauce auf allgemein anerkannte Kulturschätze und wiederholen die Rufe aus den französischen ZADs: "Wir verteidigen nicht die Natur, wir sind die Natur, die sich verteidigt."

"Die Clubmaschine" presentation, 2.12 @ Leuphana University Lüneburg

 There seems to be a heightened interest in club culture in these slowly post-pandemic times and mindsets. This means, that we get more invites to speak about club culture and specifically about Jorinde Schulz's and my 2018 book "Die Clubmaschine (Berghain)". For example, next Friday (2.12) we will speak at the "Promotionskolleg Wissenschaften der Künste" of Leuphana University Lüneburg. 

In the beginning, to be frank, I felt quite far away from club culture and thinking about it. But after my recent talk about "there is no rave on a dead planet" in Innsbruck's PMK, I more and more see the connections between subcultural perspectives and my more long-lasting and in-depth research focus of the ecological catastrophe and our inability to answer to it. I also wrote a little speculative article about "eco-punks" after the heated discussions in Innsbruck which you will be able to find here very soon :)

Nächsten Donnerstag werde ich Gelegenheit haben, einige Thesen meines neuen Buchs "Neue Vorsicht - Philosophie des Abstands im Zeitalter der Katastrophen" im Rahmen einer Diskussionsveranstaltung im Züricher Kulturhaus Helferei zu präsentieren. Titel des Abends ist:

Lohnarbeit, ständige Verfügbarkeit oder unsichtbare Care-Tätigkeiten: Unsere Gesellschaft ist chronisch erschöpft, manche von uns mehr als andere. Zeit also, zu entspannen. Doch können wir das überhaupt, ohne einer neoliberalen Logik von Achtsamkeit zu verfallen? Und wie sieht Fernbleiben von Stress ganz praktisch aus? Wir stellen Fragen, wer in unserer Gesellschaft überhaupt das Recht auf Entspannen hat, warum dies aus verschiedenen Gründen wichtig ist und welche Methoden es gibt. Und probieren es gemeinsam aus.

Ein interaktiver Abend zwischen angewandter Entspannung und Theorie, mit Expert:innen, Gesprächen und Care.

"Es dämmert immer mehr Menschen, dass wir in einem Zeitalter der Katastrophen leben. Wohingegen die ersten eineinhalb Jahrzehnte des 21ten Jahrhunderts noch vielfach hedonistischer Leichtigkeit gefrönt haben, scheint durch die Pandemie, den Ukraine-Krieg, den zunehmenden globalen Rechtsruck und die ökologische Katastrophe nun überall der politische Ernst eingezogen zu sein. Ist die Party also vorbei? Seien wir ehrlich: die Stimmung unter den Ravern ist gedrückt.
 
Umweltschutz und Ravekultur – tatsächlich scheinen sich diese beiden Unternehmungen auf den ersten Blick auszuschließen. Erster befasst sich mit der Schaffung nachhaltigerer und weniger energieintensiver Lebensweisen, zweitere ist mit Hedonismus und Ekstase verbunden: die übermäßige Verschwendung unserer und der Energie anderer, um ein größeres Gemeinschaftsgefühl zu schaffen.
 
Muss eine nachhaltige Gesellschaft prinzipiell also auf Raves verzichten und brav, geordnet und im biederen Sinne „vernünftig“ sein? In diesem Vortrag möchte ich für das Gegenteil argumentieren. Anhand eines Nachdenkens über den Exzess werde ich auf Gefahren des entstehenden grünen Kapitalismus hinweisen, welcher Verantwortung individualisiert und ein ähnlich rigides Verhältnis zu Körperlichkeit entwickelt wie der Katholizismus. Ich werde zeigen, dass eine wirklich radikal ökologische Transformation keinesfalls den Exzess verbieten darf, sondern diesen vielmehr kultivieren muss. Ein ökologische Handlung besteht nicht darin, den am Papier sparsameren Tesla zu kaufen und sonst nichts zu ändern – es geht darum, andere Interaktions- und Seinweisen untereinander und mit dem Planeten zu entwickeln. Hierbei können Raves und Clubs Labore einer neuen Kultur des nachhaltigen Verschwendens sein. In ihnen kann ein Anti-Realismus – ein Verweigern der hegemonialen Wirklichkeitserzählung – gedeihen, der für jeden radikale Wandel unabdingbar ist. Gerade in einem Zeitalter der Katastrophen müssen wir Räume der Leichtigkeit bewahren, um an den traurigen Erzählungen des grün-angestrichenen Desasterkapitalismus vorbei zu tanzen – hin zu besseren und bunteren Welten… ."

NEUE VORSICHT - Philosophie des Abstands im Zeitalter der Katastrophen

This is the announcement of my new book on keeping distance for an emancipatory project - it is written in German. For more info in English, don't hesitate to drop me an email about it.

Abstand war sicher eines prägenden Wörter der letzten Jahre. Doch was ist, wenn hinter den pandemischen Bejahungen von "social distancing" noch ein viel tiefergehendes Bedürfnis nach Des-Involvierung schlummert, welches vor Covid noch nie wirklich für ein emanzipatorisches Projekt ausformuliert werden konnte? Aktivistische, veränderungswillige Politik leidet zu oft an der Verausgabung, am Burn-Out, am Kämpfen gegen zu viel Schlimmes in der Welt - und geht daran oft energetisch zugrunde. 

Ich habe ausgehend von dieser Problemstellung eine Philosophie des Abstandhaltens für einen politischen Aktivismus geschrieben, die nun als Buch erscheint. Ich glaube, dass Sich-Raushalten nicht nur als reaktionärer Eskapismus verstanden werden darf, wie er das oft in traditionellen linken Politikverständnissen wird. Ganz im Gegenteil ist Sich Raus-Halten gerade im Zeitalter der ökologischen Katastrophen wesentlich, um Solidarität und Handlungsfähigkeit zu bewahren.

Das Thema der "Neuen Vorsicht" - welche ursprünglich von drei Nietzsche Aphorismen inspiriert ist - verfolgt mich auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen seit Jahren. Als ich letztes Jahr am Klimacamp der Lobaubesetzung wohnte, habe ich den Anstoß gefunden, meine Skizzen zu dem nun erscheinenden Buch zu kondensieren:

Stoffwechsel: "Normality" - with my digital presence from the boat

The second part of my wonderful research cluster's "Stoffwechsel - Ecologies of Collaboration" full-year occupation with Normality will unfortunately happen without my physical presence, since I am still floating down the Danube (currently shortly before Lom, Bulgaria). However, I will be able to send some digital greetings / contributions both at the opening as well as the closing event. On the 15th, in two days, you will be able to hear the draft of the audio-composition I am putting together using the MS Fusion (and the winds and the waves) as an instrument. On the 21st I will "zoom in" (the new zooming out?) I will - most likely read some of that poem ("Die Donau hinab") I am writing along the kms of the river.

We live between the suffering of normality and the dreams of another normality.
„What is normal, who is normal, who or what is not? What is a norm anyway?“ How is normality formed in society and what sets such processes in motion? Where are the boundaries of normality, how and through what are they shifted? To what extent can a life outside normality function? What role does art play in this field of reference?
The Denkkollektiv #7 explores the phenomena of normality and deviation from it as a construction of conforming and non-conforming ways of life. Of patterns of behavior, posture and movement of bodies, psyches, souls, couples, social groups, organizations and collectives.
„Normality“ oscillates between the terror of submission to a ruling norm on the one hand, and the longing for comforting habits and everyday rituals on the other. Normality is not an unchanging essence, but an ever-transforming process of intra- and extra-societal negotiation of values, boundaries, identities, and affiliations. All that we call normal today has by no means always been so and will not be so in the future. The collective experience of the suspension of so-called „normality“ by the state policies in the „Corona crisis“ of the last 2 years calls for renegotiation of normality, for impulses for new, processual normalities.
„What is normal for me?“ Based on the respective particular answers of the participants, the Denkkollektiv #7 artistically and reflectively explores present ways of life, and asks for new life possibilities.

On board the MS Fusion

This month I will float down the Danube slowly on board the MS Fusion, an artistic-installation, turned modular eco-boat, turned artistic residency my fabulous Rainer Prohaska. We have set off from Belgrade at the end of August and hope to reach the Black Sea by the beginning of October. I will work on two site-specific works, a long poem in which I have set myself the score to write (at least) one verse-line every Danube-Kilometer (they are marked as little black boards each kilometer along the shore - Belgrade was km 1164, the Black Sea will be km 0) and a little field recording audio-piece. Aside of that, I will of course continue working on my main project these years: my book on the car in the Anthropocene. Find some impressions of my work-place below and greetings from the Danube!

"Cars and Coloniality" - Video Investigation with kaur chimuk

I have had the honor to pursue a little web dialogue about the car and its coloniality for the "Affect and Colonialism-Weblab" of FU Berlin with wonderful kaur chimuk. Talking from the streets of Austria and India, we raised some questions about what kind of coloniality the car embodies. This can only be understood as a starting point for further, in depth investigations

"In this experimental video conversation, we have attempted to discuss some of the relations between cars and coloniality on-site - that is, on the streets of our respective habitats. Sitting on streets colonized by cars in both Vienna and Howrah(close to Calcutta), we drift along the many trajectories a reflection on this central piece of material late-modern capitalist history brought us. The noise of the traffic mirrors our own ramblings about the multitudinous meanderings about these very exhaust (ed) entanglements. Within this short duration, we tried to explore the performativity of gender proposition, especially in the context of South Asian queer accessibility around the interest of automobile marketing in terms of sharing/projecting equal opportunity in the time of aggressive 'globalization'."

Ökologischer Antifaschismus? Versuch einer Ausweitung der Kampfzone fürs 21. Jahrhundert

Mainly inspired by the ground-breaking book "White Skin, Black Fuel" by Andreas Malm and the Zetkin Collective, I have speculated about a new kind of alliance between Anti-Fascism and Ecological Activism for the 21st century. I want to understand the fight against (the hegemony of) Automobility, coal industry etc. as an anti-fascist struggle against the material heritage of European Fascism. The text appeared in German in the July Edition of Volksstimme and can be read online here.    

"Im 21. Jahrhundert sollte sich die Erinnerungskultur von den Gräueltaten der NS-Verbrecher*innen ausweiten auf ihr materielles Erbe, welches bis heute sowohl in vielen staatstragenden Namen wie im materiellen Erbe in Form von Straßennetzen, vernachlässigten Bahnverbindungen und irrationaler Förderung von fossilen Brennstoffen fortbesteht. Ausschwitz liegt in einem Kohlerevier und in einigen Nebenlagern wurden die Häftlinge auch durch Zwangsarbeit im Untertagebau ermordet. Auf eine ähnliche Weise ist die »freie Fahrt für freie Bürger« mit den Aufschrift »Arbeit mach frei« und »Jedem das Seine« der Konzentrationslager Theresienstadt und Buchenwald verbunden. Wer heute einen Porsche mit Stolz fährt, reiht sich unwissentlich und unwillentlich in diese Tradition ein. Wenn wir bald mal wieder auf der Baustelle der aktuellen Stadtautobahn zur Lobau stehen und diese besetzen, können wir mit Fug und Recht auch »Alerta Antifascista« rufen und so dem Antifaschismus eine neue Kraft verleihen."

Affect as Disruption: Affective Experimentation, Automobility, and the Ecological Crisis

 

Together with Paul Schuetze, Imke von Maur and Jan Slaby, I have published a paper titled "Affect as Disruption: Affective Experimentation, Automobility, and the Ecological Crisis" in the just-released "Methodologies of Affective Experimentation" Anthology at Palgrave.

"In this text we construe affect as a conservative force, as glue that holds social life in place. With this starting point, we direct our attention towards the unfolding of the ecological crises. Using the case of ‘automobile supremacy’, we discuss a paradigmatic affective formation that keeps Western societies deadlocked in a loop of business as usual, preventing them from adequately addressing the climate catastrophe. Drawing on the concepts of affective arrangement and affective milieu, we chart some of the affective groundings of automobile supremacy and of the widespread failure to overcome the status quo. In response to this conservative thrust of affect, we then survey how ossified affective formations can be disrupted and eventually left behind. Can affect itself be deployed as a resource to disturb, fracture, and break sedimented social formations and patterns? In search of an answer, we explore prospects of obstruction leaning on affective experimentation as a creative method of disruption. By discussing ways to disturb automobility in its unfettered flow, we provide an angle on modes of disruption as small-scale openings that abruptly and momentarily halt the affective relations that were sustaining social formations before."

Diverting the Public Space #2 @ Im_Flieger

Next week, 27th of June and 1st of July we will be back at Im_Flieger to continue our ongoing urban space performative intervention research "Diverting the Public Space" - this time Dutch artist, performer and theater maker Guus Diepenmaat will join our practice. You can attend our activities in a workshop / sharing on both Wednesday and Friday at 18h. More information here.

"The research in public space, which began in the summer of 2021, will continue in 2022. The current Corona pandemic has, among other things, changed and sensitized the perception of public space. The project Diverting the Public Space aims to accompany this transformation in a performative exploratory and supportive way. In Vienna, the Im_flieger runway serves as the starting point for the research.

Through a spectrum of shared physical practices in public space, Diverting the Public Space aims to explore new modes of action and perception, leading to a self-empowerment of the participants and an invitation to dialogue and engagement with passers-by. Together, old patterns of movement in public space will be questioned and a new playful yet critical physicality will be explored. The developed and guided partitions / scores shall give the possibility to deeply inscribe into the public space in a different way and to practice and experience a choreographic perception. The space, transformed into a multifaceted adventure playground (for young and old), is intended to open utopian windows of possibility for a different „merging“ with our human-made, urban environment and the questioning of its norms."

"The Car & the Modern Concept of the Good Life" - Talk at Vivir Bien Conference

The Centre PROEIB Andes at the University Mayor of San Simón in Cochabamba, Bolivia together with the Max-Weber-Kolleg of the University of Erfurt are organizing a bilingual (English / Spanish) conference about the concept of "The Good Life / Vivir Bien / Sumak Kawsay/Suma Quamana" next week (13th to 16th of June) and I have been invited to give a talk about the car and its exhaust(ed) entanglements with the modern idea of the Good Life.

Living Well with exhaust(ed) entanglements?

The car is perhaps the symbol of the good life in its modern declination. What is called “Modernity” might have started out in Europe with some privileged white men having “enlightened” ideas, but it nowadays has to be regarded as one globalized epistemo-ontological regime that tends to homogenize the planet ever more by means of distributing consumer goods such as the car to ever more regions and corners of the world. For this reason, the term Homogenocene, as proposed by Charles Mann, might be a helpful further specification of the much discussed “Anthropocene” - and the car is one main agent of flattening and paving this planet to an ever more homogeneous habitat for modern humanoids while causing extinction and displacement of many other life forms.

In how far is our modern version of the “good life” toxic? What does it mean if the concepts, ideals and life-forms most of us humans strive for are progressively understood to have a catastrophic ecological effect on the planet? In this talk, I want to address and frame such questions by referring to the concept of “exhaust(ed) entanglements” that I have developed for the eponymous conference I am organizing in May 2022 in Berlin.

While it might be true that “Modernity” as a philosophical, epistemological concept might be somewhat passé (to the extent that some, like Bruno Latour, even declare that “we have never been modern”), the very modern promise of the Good Life seems to live on and continue to attract more and more peoples to this very one modern lifestyle. In the context of the “Good Life”-Conference, I am particularly interested in stimulating a dialogue about these “exhaust(ed) entanglements” with the car, Modernity and its promises of the good life between scholars of Germany (a “fully developed” car nation) and Bolivia (in which car culture isn’t – for good or for worse – developed to a similar degree).

Presenting "Visceral Fiction" at depot Vienna

This Thursday, we will have a release event of the book "Visceral Fiction" (edited by Anita Kaya, Johanna Nielson, Elisabeth Schäfer, Agnes Schneidewind and myself) at Vienna's depot. Find more information here.

20 years of artists‘ initiative Im_flieger: VISCERAL FICTION is an investigative review and research in the process of inscribing history/stories in, around and with Im_flieger. Im_flieger is a self-organised, rhizomatic platform and a body for dance, performance and transmedia art.

By means of interviews, conversations, images, and theoretical discourses, an activation of the network took place in a one-year research process, which we designed in analogy to a „detective agency“: People, spaces, artistic works, contents, … The past (even if only a fraction) gained attention, appreciation and relevance in the present.

The detectives, authors and conversation partners Robert Dressler, David Ender, Veza Fernández, Jack Hauser, Michael Hirsch, Sabina Holzer, Katrin Hornek, Kilian Jörg, Anita Kaya, Felix Kaya, Elke Krasny, Simon Mayer, Johanna Nielson, Martina Ruhsam, Elisabeth Schäfer, Sylvia Scheidl, Agnes Schneidewind and Sabine Sonnenschein ask about the discursive potential of self-organization, artistic work, its formats, conditions of production, and about the significance of art and artists‘ organizations and spaces as decentralized movements in the cultural-political field and all the relationships that derive from them. But above all: what kind of poetics does the process of this detective investigation require?

Even if we, artists and curators, cannot solve the major social problems into whose abyss we are currently looking with art, we can at least uncover the mechanisms, hierarchies and structures in and with which we work, become aware of them, change them, refuse them, realise others. Museums and theatres – as traditional, ritual spaces and places of assembly in Western society – serve to rehearse the values that are relevant to each society.

What new rituals and places of assembly does our contemporary society need and what new social order is to be rehearsed?

How can artistic and curatorial creation connect with society, the world, in a different way and become effective?

How can artistic and curatorial practice be developed to build a sustainable dialogue between artists and audiences?

How can artistic practices and methods be experienced as an essential part of our social life together?

How can art no longer be received as a closed system, but be recognised in its interactive research and transformation potential, and become relevant to social issues and processes?

How do we work on the community, on the social order?

It’s not about giving answers. It’s time for a break in the space-time continuum, but, … will you ever be the same when you return?

Talk about ecological art making at FS1

When I was in Salzburg last month, I was quite spontaneously invited to talk about ecologically motivated artistic interventions at the local TV-station FS1. I was able to speak about performative interventions to hack our toxic normality, the possibility of the arts to change our sensual and affective regimes and - last but not least - the necessity to fight capitalism.

Toxic Temple MESS - the second (+Book presentation in Vienna)

 

Tonight, at 17h, the second Toxic Temple MESS starts in Vienna's AIL. As part of the "Lange Nacht der Forschung" Anna Lerchbaumer and me will present the Toxic Temple Book at 20:30 and from then on the MESS (a durational, multi-media and transdisciplinary performance) can be visited everyday (Saturday, Sunday, Monday) from 13-18h. On Monday everything will culminate to a HOLY MESS with concerts, recitations, performances etc.

TOXIC TEMPLE, the book (de Gruyter 2022) - out now!

 

It is with considerable joy that I can announce the release of TOXIC TEMPLE, the book which I consider the next contribution of what I once what to look back at as my oeuvre. In Toxic Temple, Anna Lerchbaumer and me have embarked more than 4 years ago on "an artistic & philosophical journey into the Toxicity of the Now" and have since then met many contributors and inspirations on the way. We have created musical compositions, sound pieces, video installations, entire exhibitions, performances, lectures and whole philosophies of this speculative religion venerating WASTE as a means of communication with the human after-life. In this wonderful book, we have combined various genres of text, from prayers, poetry to philosophical investigations into plastic eternity, nuclear semiotics, the oceanic undead, the many worlds ending, and so many more topics. We have contributions of authors such as Heather Davis, Sam Hertz, Eben Kirksey, Julia Grillmayr, Elisabeth Felkensteiner, Julietta Aranda and many more. On top of that, the book consists of a stunning collage of exhibition documentation, images specifically made for the book and other graphic experiments. Also, we will celebrate two release events:

• on the 8th of May we will have a full afternoon of performative interventions, readings, lectures and concerts around the TOXIC TEMPLE at Hopscotch Reading Room in Berlin 
• from the 20th to the 23th of May we will devote an entire holy MESS to the book in Vienna's AIL
